My guess is all the major schools called Fred Hoiberg, even UCLA. He's three years in and hasn't had the chance to say "no" until this year.
Well if you believe the stories around, he had much interest from NBA teams last season...and said "No" at that time.
Maybe they were going to use the old "your football team's jerseys look just like ours!" and hope that enticed him.
I do, and it would make sense that the NBA spotted his ability before the rest of them caught on.
Fred, or any coaches for that matter, would be stupid not to listen to any offer just to entertain them. The coaching profession is a big fraternity and network and I'm sure Fred handled it with class because you never know when either he or an assistant will need a job OR when he will need to inquire about a transfer. Now, I also realize you were exaggerating a little bit.

Not surprising. I wouldn't be shocked if there were colleges looking at him last year and I would guess that every major opening this year looked at Hoiberg. Same thing with NBA teams. The NBA teams will look at him every year.
I think he is just a coaching star. It's pretty easy to see after 3 years.

No they are not. They are in the Semi Finals. You can only be in the Final Four in the tournament that matters. Also, I realize you are joking and many Hok fans will say this.
Exactly plus most coaches would use the interest as leverage to get a better contract at their current school too. One of my college professors gave the class a bit of advice that to this day I still think is a great piece of advice: It is never a bad thing to apply for jobs that you are not sure you want. The worst thing that can happen to you is you are offered a job that you decide that you don't want. In the coaching world and in the working world I think that is great advice as you can never have too many opportunities to pick from so at the very least you should listen because you never know what might come out of it.
Of course I hope Fred stays here for a LONG time but as a professional you at least owe it to yourself to listen because what if (and this is completely exaggerating of course) a school offered him a ridiculous deal such as $10 mil a year for 20 years, you'd be crazy not to at least entertain such an offer no matter where your loyalties are at.
For all of the 'sky is falling' Cyclone fans that think Fred will bolt, he's obviously had many calls this spring and he's still our coach. With the success that is still to come, I look forward to Fred and CPR to say--'Why not stay at ISU, there is no beter place to be?'
Good points. Hadn't thought about that angle on Hoiberg's response to teams contacting him.
