So I've noticed that our strength of schedule for MBB is ranked considerably higher than that of Iowa's. Considering how much I hear from Iowa fans of us having a weak schedule, I found this interesting. Any thoughts?

Who deals in statistics like SOS? Everyone knows the Big 10 is the best conference in the history of American sports. That is an undisputed fact.

The SOS includes the pre-conference schedule. Theirs was very weak. They've had a very tough conference schedule to date and now they will have a much easier closing stretch. Too late though barring a great run.

Heard some guy on TnT this morning claim that ISU would be 2-8 in conference play right now if they played Iowa schedule. He claimed there was NO WAY ISU would beat Wisconsin at home. NO WAY!

Ill give the Big 10 credit, they have a great conference this season, but I'm pretty comfortable in saying ISU would be 5-5, at worst, with that schedule right now.

Who listens to Iowa fans about this?

We're headed for the tournament. They aren't. They can babble all day long, but that's not changing.

While this is true, I still think strength of schedule is a valid point when discussing the whole W/L record. (not that they have a valid argument there right now anyway)

For instance, if Iowa happened to waltz thru the B1G in football & get a better bowl than our 6-6 / 7-5 Clones, I'm not going to just sit back & let them squawk about how their team is so superior.

I've conceded to Iowa fans that the B1G is a better bball conference this year as long as they agree that the Big 12 is a better football conference. (most don't, surprise surprise) Most of them don't realize that they have the easiest schedule in the B1G, though.

This is why you need to avoid playing lots of really bad teams during the non-conf season. It's hard to get rid of the effect they have on your SOS.

While this is true, I didn't think Iowa had that much of an easier non-conference than we had. That can't be the only reason Iowa is 32 spots behind Iowa State in SOS.

It is, they played a lot of very low RPI teams, teams that play a lot of other very bad teams in conference and really drag the SOS down.

I guess, but I figured that we played our fair share of non-conference opponents with extremely low RPI's but maybe not compared to Iowa.

Iowa has the number one SOS in the B10 (and I believe the nation) since Dec 31st, so it's most certainly the non-conf schedule.

Creighton doesn't have a great SOS yet their RPI didn't take much of a hit losing to Drake after beating them by 30. I don't really understand how this all works. Will be interested what happens to Creighton RPI after losing by about 20 to Indiana State. I suppose not much, they don't have many losses period despite not playing a great schedule.

RPI doesn't account for the margin of victory, which is one of it's biggest flaws IMO. The formula for RPI looks solely at winning percentages. RPI = (.5*opponents' winning percentages)+(.25*opponents' opponents' winning percentages)+(.25*your winning percentage)

I'm not really sure how that SOS works but I figured it is accouting for even the games they haven't played yet. I find it hard to belive that they would have that low of an SOS so far with thier first 11 Big 10 games they have played. If it doesn't account for the last part of their Big 10 schedule then they are going to fall quite a bit below 100.

Thanks District Cyclone. That explains why both hoks and us losing close ones to good teams helps not at all.

They had a very weak out-of-conference slate.
