The Flynn Effect should upend some of the smugness among those who have historically done well in global I.Q. standings. For example, while there is still a race gap, black Americans are catching up — and now do significantly better than white Americans of the “greatest generation” did in the 1940s...

i didn't read the article but a big reason why people appear less intelligent now than they did 100 years ago is because the bottom level intelligence people are staying the same intelligence, but the average is continually increasing, thus creating a larger gap.

Also, the unintelligent people have more access to public media, ie: facebook to showcase to the world exactly how smart they are

Intelligence is said to be 50% hereditary. So right out of the gate, they are screwed. Then when you couple it with the fact that trailer parks aren't a very good learning environment, you end up with things like HawkeyeNation and 99% of the posts that fills that website.

Intelligent folks have access to the same media (we're all here together on CF, after all), but couple this easy access with the Dunning-Kruger effect (Wikipedia Info: Dunning) and we get all sorts of weird crap.

The internet may be vast, but it sure is shallow in many places.

Never heard of the Dunning-Kruger effect, but am well acquainted with the Diane Kruger Effect. It has many symptoms, one of which is uncontrollable use of the phrase hominahominahominahominahominahominahominahomina

Maybe more intelligent, I can buy that, but not smarter. We invent more stuff and solve technical problems better but don’t get along with each other any better than rampaging chimpanzees. I suppose I should give us some credit for not igniting a global nuclear holocaust since the end of WWII but that might just be luck or innate survivalism and not real “smartsâ€￾.
