QB Play

We have average QBs. It's not the offense or the play calling. Everybody has all these answers but our signal callers are simply put - average. To all the guys clamoring for Barnett to play - well there you go. For all the guys that think Jantz gives us a better chance... doubtful. The fact is and it seems so obvious now - they both are so average. CPR wasn't lying when he said he didn't know before the year. I don't think he did. And that is how this season will go. One week it will be the greatest of times and then the next week it will be the worst of times. But even in wins the QB play will be average. It was against TCU but man 2 bombs to Lenz and it's hard to see through the euphoria. Anyone notice KSU's safeties shading Lenz ALL day? That was fun while it lasted. What bothered me the most yesterday was that Barnett had all day to throw. The line was awesome pass blocking. And yet it all looked familiar. I'm not writing the season off. We have a good team. I'm just going to lower my expectations from the QB spot. Then when Barnett/Jantz plays well I'll take it and when they don't I'll know that's what we have on this roster - average quarterbacks. From my seats on the East side - I will remember that wheel route that Barnett missed to SJ for ALOT longer than I will either of Lenz's TDs last week.

K-state was daring ISU to run the ball. When K-state's d-lineman are stuffing the run on their own, that makes it virtually impossible to throw the ball effectively without a Todd Blythe out there.

ISU has to figure out a way to improve the running game. I don't know how they are going to do it.

I love it, if you take jb's 2 bombs to lenz out he is not good. Come on, he threw 2 good balls in that game for td's!!!!

Not sure if jb is the guy to win a big 12 title, but he has won 4 big 12 games and kept isu in his losses. If the running game gets going isu will be fine.

Let's not freak out after losing by 6 to the #5 team in the country!

Barnett at TCU - 13-22 for 198 yards. 2 passes to Lenz for 125 yards. That made him 11-20 for 73 yards in non-bomb production. To my point, and I'm giving him credit, that's average. The 2 throws to Lenz were great. Again, and I did it myself, the euphoria of a road win against a ranked team hides alot. I'm not freaking out. I've actually found a happy place about our QB play. I'll expect average play and hope that some of the 50% of completed passes are for Tds or long plays. I'm not trying to be sarcastic either. That is who we have.

What concerns me is that he seems to not understand that 4th down means you have to at least try to give a player a chance to make a play.

I just have a hard time deciding if I like watching

1. Turnovers by QBS

or

2. Three and outs.

I gotta get used to having one or the other.. just not sure what is going to be easier to stomach.

UHHH....you get both of these with both QBs. I think you get more boneheaded TOs with Jantz though. Barnett is the lesser of two evils IMO. At least I feel some level of confidence that we will be in the game with JB. SJ scares the hell outta me every single down he touches the ball.

commentator Eric Crouch hit it on the head, when he said JB didnt want it bad enough on both 4th downs. Other wise he would of tried something with his feet rather throwing the ball away.

I agree. I was in Steele's camp before. I even defended him zealously on this site. I think Barnett gives us the best chance to win. That's the mind **** here though. Being the better of 2 options doesn't make him a great QB. He's average. He is a 50% passer. That is what we have. People need to be more pragmatic about this.

IMO when we are in obvious passing situations (like 97 yards in 2 minutes) Jantz should come in.

I disagree with the notion that Barnett doesn' "want it bad enough" , but there did not seem to be a sense of urgency. Steele has this IMO, and is able to read the WHOLE field, not just throw to his pre snap read.

Barnett missed on throws in our last 2 drives, and also missed open receivers. The swing pass to shontrelle was open for 10 yards on about every play. 0 first downs in last 2 drives is just bad.

I never thought Steele should have been pulled (even after TCU).

I agree we have two average QB's. That might even be generous.

The problem is with the offense we run , the QB position has to be above average. Especially at a school like ISU where we don't sign 4&5 star recruits.

I am beginning to question our o-line & OC coaching abilities. IMO our o-line has been inconsistent at best during Rhoads tenure. Our offense this year has been largely predictable.

What also concerns me is the ability of this staff to identify all-conference calicur players on the offensive side of the ball.

Ilove what Rhoads is doing, but I feel he will have some decisions to make after this season.

Wait, so Barnett isn't the answer?

AH-MAZING insight....

The point is - he is who we have. Some people think if we do this or do that then Barnett will go back to being Tom Brady. So far I've heard: the oline needs to run block better, Mess should be fired, offensive scheme sucks, we don't have a Blythe, and on and on. Change any and all that and Barnett is still a 50% passer. A career 50% passer and yes that's our best option.

We have two below average qbs. Let's be real here.

This. Average means middle of the road, right? So our passing game should be 5th or so in the conference, right?

Our QBs are terrible, let's be real. The only reason I am so blunt about this and it bothers me so much is if we did have these AVERAGE QBs you guys are talking about, we would be 6-0 right now.

2011 Offense:
ISU 386 ypg OPP 427 ypg

2012 Offense:
ISU 342 ypg OPP 342 ypg 13 turnovers to 14 for opp.

44 ypg worse for offense
85 ypg better for defense

Same qbs, same backs, basically same receivers, new oline, new OC.

I think there are a lot of good points brought up in this thread. Personally, I believe the offensive unit, as a whole, has much more confidence in Barnett vs. Jantz. Even with a higher completion %, you just never felt confident that Jantz wasn't going to turn it over at some point soon. Plus, Barnett has shown the ability to put a better touch on the ball on deep throws vs. Jantz.

I heard that comment by Crouch too and I don't necessarily agree with wanting it or not wanting it, but I think there should have been a higher sense of urgency at that point by Barnett to use his feet and scramble for the first down.

I think the toughest part about yesterday was watching us miss our last 7-8 passes of the game, including 1 to Johnson out of the backfield at K-STate's 40 on the 2nd to last drive. He had a lot of open field ahead of him. The other 1 on the 1st play of the last drive where he overthrew the receiver as well. Both should have been completions.

I think Barnett will get better and he started looking off his primary receiver in the 4th quarter.

2 things will help: First, a more physical offensive line which opens up the run game more. Second, and I think this is where Rhoads really excels, is making adjustments from week to week. I think they will look at Barnett's mistakes and will be better next week.

The good news, as of right now anyway, all of a sudden looks like we have a legitimate shot in every game (excpet maybe Oklahoma and WVU) to win. Baylor, OSU, Texas no longer look so tough. If we can make adjustments on offense, it could be a really good year.

Sam is comin this week!!!

No, we dont have a top flight qb. Thats a fact. But Barnett will continue to get better. You have to remember he is only a sophomore. There are lots of things that are going to come with more experience. I really think he was trying too hard the last two possessions. With 4 minutes left he could have dinked and dunked more and gotten a couple first downs instead of the deeper passes. We have seen what he can do vs osu, and we have seen what jantz can do as well vs iowa. Its just frustrating that level of play is not more consistent.
