OK I drank the kool aid, but next years schedule..

We're not beating Oklahoma State next year. Otherwise, you're right, it is the same favorable schedule that KU was able to take advantage of this year (and that we should have been able to take advantage of in 2005).

Okie St. is nothing special yeah they can score a lot of points but they were still nothing great this year. Their defense is going to get worse because they lose a lot of players and on offense they lose their best two player in Savage and Bowmen. Early in the year they really struggled with Savage out. I am not saying ISU will for sure beat them next year but the game will be a toss up.

I thought I was optimistic. Every year I'm convinced that this could be it. Then...well you know, you're a Cyclone fan.

It's nice to have that kind of outlook. You're just setting yourself up for a letdown.
Hope I'm wrong.

my expectations are to win the winable games this time-sdsu, kent state, and unlv are absolute must wins for me next year. after that, obviously the iowa game would be nice, along with some nice conference wins. anything over that is gravy.

If I had to place money on next season...id wager that they do not go undefeated in non conference schedule.

We've all been pretty enamoured with AA at QB, but i think the dynamic of that position changes if he's a starter and teams get to film study on him more. I hope the kid(or whoever wins the position) is lights out, but cordinators will figure out what he doesnt like to face. Juggernaut, ISU wont be.

Id be happy with a 6-6 record. With that said im doomed because that'll mean they'll drop some winable games and then maybe beat KU or someone like that....thus making the 6-6 record really not satisfying at the time. :biglaugh:

I love the koolaid as much as anyone, but I make fun of Pukeye fans for coming up with these projections when we haven't even gone through Spring drills yet. I think I'll wait and see how our first two "easy" games are played before I make even the smallest of predictions about how the season will end.

I don't like our chances against A&M or OSU, and I think K-State and Colorado are all "iffy" (these are all road games, aren't they?). Just looking at these 4 games realistically knocks down that 10-2 record to 7-5 or even 6-6. It'd also be real easy to say that we'd breeze right through such a weak non-conference schedule next year, but the one we played this year wasn't much better and we fell flat on our faces. Plus we lose a lot of experience in Meyer, Blythe, Bowen, etc. Next year's not going to be as easy as we'd all like to think. It'd be nice to hit 6 wins next year, but I think that might be asking a lot in year #2.

I think 7 wins, with a ceiling of 9, bottom out of 5.

Someone mentioned we won't make any huge strides next year. I completely disagree with this. I point to our Oline. I think we will have a dominant offensive line next year. Arnaud, ARob and co are going to be made to look very good behind these guys next year.

Wow, good thing I kept reading this thread otherwise I would have thought a few Hawk fans slipped into usernames on here. 8, 9, and 10 wins, are you guys serious?? Notice every post that is super-positive starts with IF? That's the whole problem, we're going to be inconsistent again next year with a new QB and other first-time starters on the field. As for whoever said we're just automatically better w/o Brett, I hope you're right. I'm with the guy who said we're more likely to go winless than get 10 wins (not saying I think we'll go winless but just changing the schedule means nothing until we prove we're a better team next year).

OK you almost deserve neg rep for sounding like a Hawk fan. After a 3 win season I think a 5 to 6 win season with an easier schedule is far more realistic. What did we see out there this year to make us think we even have a remote shot at 7-10 wins? We lose some key seniors on top of it. If we somehow turn it around that quickly then sign Chizik to a hefty contract extension because that would be one helluva turnaround for year 2 of a program like ours.

I like not having OK and TX, but South Dakota St. terrifies me as well based on our early season performance this year.
:wubclub:

I don't have any objections to the optimism, indeed, I'll remind people that the struggles in the first two-thirds of the season were largely due to adapting to a completely new staff and system. My questions would tie to how well the offensive line steps up with an important starter missing, how soon a new QB settles in (and which one of four exciting prospects), then the defensive tackles and linebackers. I'm really looking forward to Spring ball!

I do know that there is no way on God's Green Earth that we should be playing a South Dakota State--for any reason. There is no advantage, aside from filling a hole in the schedule. Does the AD staff really think that such an opponent will help sell season tickets?

Uh, yeah, we usually have one or two "patsies" on the schedule every year. Those teams beat us last year but you do have to schedule a few of those if you want to have a full schedule each year.

It's possible, but I'd love for even 6-6 the way our program has been the last two years.

I will be shocked if we don't win six games next year. 10-2 is a possibility but I don't think we are there yet. We can definitely go 7-5 and that seems very possible especially if Arnaud can feel comfortable right away.

I'd be happy with 6 next year. 2009 is the year we need to make some noise.

I think if Chizik is really all that great, he needs to start producing next year. With all the coaching adjustments elsewhere in big 12, we will have a big advantage over some of these other teams.

JP needs to set a higher expectation from the coaching staff for next year - maybe a bowl game at the least.

Agreed. Now that my wife and I are both out of school and will have a year's worth of salary under our belts, we might be able to afford bowling next winter!

Fun to look at how we stack up
QB: Should be improved, with Arnaud, strong arm and he knows the system (Grade B)
RB: We know who we have, and help is coming. (Grade B)
OL: The biggest question mark last year will be our strength this coming year(Grade A)
WR: No Blythe, but plenty still there with Hamilton a big time player(Grade C+)

DB: Needed first aid to start last year, but with returning vets and incoming help, we should be decent (Grade B-)
LB: Minus our best guy, but good returnees and help coming in (Grade C)
DL: Need a couple of fat guys in the middle, otherwise we look decent. Hopefully a JUCO or two will come in to shore that up (Grade C-)

Special teams: We improved 1000 percent in the last 4 games, and with a REAL returner coming in, more depth with RS frosh and JUCOs, this should be a serviceable unit.(Grade C+)

Overall, greatly improved over 2007 in my view.

really looks favorable for an ISU run. This is the best case senario, but a possibliity.
South Dakota State WIN
Kent State WIN
Iowa WIN
UNLV WIN
Kansas LOSS
Baylor WIN
Nebraska WIN
A and M WIN
Okla St. WIN
CU WIN
Mo LOSS
K State WIN

That would be 10-2, and I'm not convinced we can beat either MO or KU next year.

At first we laughed at any Hawk Fan that predicted 10-2 in '07 and then we served them Crow when they went 6-6.

Seriously people, get a grip on reality; we got beat at home by Kent - even Toledo and Nebraska beat us convincingly. We're going to have an inexperienced QB and some big holes on defense to fill. I'll take 5, maybe 6 wins. Also, isn't K-State away - this list seems like we play them at home.

If you call losing to Toledo by one point "convincing" , that was more like ******* a game down our legs that we had all but won. But your point remains the same - I think we struggle next year.
