Get me lost in Iowa

Terre Haute, only the cemetery left. Just south of Decatur, west of Davis City and north of Lamoni. If you look hard enough you may find some foundations of the houses in the pasture of our neigbors. The cemetery was fun to scare people at though.

Yetter in Sac County. GRain elevator, locker and 5 or 6 houses.

Claim to fame is there is a really old, cool 3 story house taht loks really out of place. It is empty but you can tell it was very expensive in its day. I was told that it was a brothel / casino used by Chicago's wealthy (and gansters) for overnight stop on their way to Veags and the West Coast back in the 30s and 40s.

That always made sense to me because it is close to both Highways 20 and 30 and is about a days drive from Chicago.

Benson, IA

Has about 6 homes and you can drive 55mph(legally) right through the middle of town.

Troy in the southeast part of the state, on our family trips to visit grandma in Illinois we used to go through it. It was a detour off of highway 2. I was still young so just remember it being very small.

Corley, population 26.

Any discussion of this nature would be incomplete without mentioning Colwell and Bassett. The Colwell Tap and The Shed are two of the finer establishments in Iowa, no doubt.

Orchard was mentioned by somebody in the Enterprise thread. It is home to one of the coolest tornado pics ever taken imo.

That, and it sits right on Hwy 9. It might be on its way to becoming one of the towns in this thread though. As Al stated they're trying to raise money to keep the high school open and it's not sounding good.

What's interesting about the school situation, is that due to Riceville's location in comparison to other school districts, and how it straddles the Mitchell/Howard County line, its not going to be feasible to consolidate w/any one of the surrounding districts.

If they consolidate with Howard/Winneshiek (Cresco), you would have kids in NE Mitchell County going to school 40 miles away when they could be going to school 20 miles away. You have the same problem for kids in Howard County if it were to consolidate with Osage or St. Ansgar in Mitchell County.

What makes the most logistical sense is to split the district 3 ways between Cresco, Osage, and St. Ansgar.

You should note if the town is on a highway. Most of the smaller highways have google street view, it's kind of interesting to view the smaller more abandoned places.

Grandparents live in St. Olaf Iowa. Maybe two roads in the town, but you can still get the worlds largest tenderloin there though.
