It was just one example. Greg may very well be the next great college coach.
I just see far too much grasping for other coaches based soley on how their team is doing at the moment.
We saw it right after Morgan was fired - the "little" teams that were doing well in the dance - we wanted all their coaches. It was very knee-jerk.
Pollard went out and found his guy, someone that didn't just make a one-year splash. (I am not saying Rutgers is such, as they've been getting better the past few years).
If a change is made in any of the football coaching positions - I expect Pollard to do the same as he did for basketball.
8. Bobby Elliot - Iowa ties. Downside here is his attachment to the University of Iowa. Been there done that.

For ISU, these are the type of coaches I think we could get:
- Head Coach from a smaller non-BCS school
- Assistant Coach from a BCS school
- Head Coach from 1AA school
I don't see any of the big time non-BCS coaches (Boise St., TCU) jumping for ISU when they could probably wait it out one or two more years there and get to go to an even bigger BCS school.
An assistant coach at a BCS school is probably the most likely, but people like Gene Chizik at Texas are getting looks from some big time programs too, and ISU will not be able to compete against about half of the BCS schools for a coach.

I have to disagree with him being a bad coach, remember his short stint here netted the only great years of special teams play during McCarney era.
Had he been healthy at the time of Fry leaving, he would be the current coach at Iowa.
IMO The downfall of KSU had more to do with the erosion of talented players they recruited and landed.
I agree with you 100%, I wasn't trying to nitpick. Houston Nutt is the one that got me. Not too many people would know that name if he hadn't beat Auburn this year. If you're going to hire someone, hire a coordinator who's produced a consistently good offense or defense over the past few years.
Honestly, when I was reading this forum last night, the two names that popped in my head were "Bo Pelini" and "Gene Chizik", and I see both have been mentioned this morning.
Speaking hypothetically, IF Dan McCarney is fired at the end of the year (which I don't think will happen unless this team (God forbid) finishes 3-9 or 4-8 with a loss to Colorado). I wouldn't mind seeing us get a defensive coordinator out of the SEC, which is, IMO, the toughest conference in college football. While local ties are wonderful and there are a lot of good Midwestern players (linemen in particular), if you want to win you need to be landing recruits out of Texas, Florida, California, or possibly New York/New Jersey, and a coach out of the South would be very useful in that capacity. There are ALWAYS coordinators somewhere who want their shot at a HC job. We just have to trust in Pollard to make a good judgement (which he should based off his MBB coach decision and if he learned anything from Alvarez)
Cooper wanted the job here years ago, but they hired Duncan (maybe Criner) instead

Lots of good posts..... regarding K-State, they suffered a similar fate as Iowa did when Hayden left the cupboard a bit bare... recruiting was a bit harder b/c teams were using Snyder's age against him... they'll be back, as will Colorado, you can recruit anyone to Boulder and Hawk can coach.
but speaking of age, a Price or Cooper may be good for the short term, but man how long can they coach for? Not everyone is a 78(?) year old cyborg like Joe Paterno. I would prefer someone a bit younger out of the mid-major ranks, or perhaps a Bo Pelini (the guy has **** and vinegar in his veins).... and for those who worry about an Urban Meyer type situation where if they get good they bolt... I ask, is that such a bad thing? b/c if they get good enough to get lured to the NFL or a marquee NCAA program, then they did their job here and got us to the next level, which would make ISU an attractive place to coach for another young talent.
The Joe Glenn (Wyo) thing may not be too attractive, but Laramie is arguably one of the toughest D-I places to coach in the USA. He had a shining moment in '04 beating UCLA in a bowl, but seemingly hasn't built off that momentum yet. Of course being in Ames, the big 12, and a 50k plus seat stadium may help him with recruiting.

This is the best post in this thread. I think we need to be realistic about who would come and coach here. A coordinator from a national power (Texas, LSU, etc) is not going to come to Ames to coach ISU. Dan came from Wisconsin, which was at the time pretty high on the pecking order, but did it only because of his Iowa ties. I think if we were to get an assistant from a major BCS school it'd have to be someone who flew under the radar a bit (Ken O'Keefe or someone of that nature) or someone who has strong Iowa ties. Aside from that we're going to have to dig a bit to find a diamond in the rough. The bottom line is that we don't have enough money to pay a huge salary to outweigh the fact that we've got the smallest budget in the Big 12, and on top of that we don't pay our assistants all that well, which means any coach will have a hard time hiring and retaining quality assistants, which is where success is really built.
No Terry Bowden, please. I remember during the A&M game last year, listening to him butcher fact after fact about us, regarding our school and not getting any of our players names right. He sounded completely ignorant of anything west of the mississippi, or north of the Mason-dixon.

Iowa was so happy to get rid of Bobby Elliot. The only reason he was kept around for so long was because Hayden was good friends with his dad Bump who was the old AD. Most Iowa fans would have lost it if Iowa gave Elliot the HC job.
When he was at ISU the defense back field was not that good had holes everywhere there were just good enough players it masked the bad sceem. the special teams were nothing to brag about the only good thing they did was Billups punt return in the insight bowl. Everyone I know was so happy to see him leave

I've only seen his name on here once, but it wasnt for the job. Wouldnt Larry Coker be a good higher if he were fired. Huge Florida ties with recruiting, and imagine the instate recruits who would want to play for him.
I am sure that the list would be long and impressive.
