Franklin worked under Mike Leach and Kentucky and took over for him after he left for OU in 2000. Kentucky tanked that season, but it was't because of the offense (11th in total offense nationally, second in passing).
He has had success at Troy, MTSU, and LaTech. I also think it is telling that he has always landed on his feet and never been without a job, even after AU. That makes me think he is respected as an OC.

At LaTech he is working with Spread master Sonny ***** so I'm guessing they have worked together very closely on game planning and calling plays.
Franklin looks like a good spread OC with a lot of experience.
Not an up an comer like Kinsbury or Frost but might be more successfull in the immediate future due to experience.

I don't think it was a 'hire this guy or else' type of thing, but Chiz was looking at Herman, and Pollard recommended him to CPR.
Admittedly, this is all just my recollection. I could have been drunk.
Wasn't Tony Franklin a place kicker at Texas, then for the Phil. Eagles?

That's interesting. You would think Chiz would have hired him before he left instead of waiting until CPR was the coach here.

Looks like he'd fit in well with a Mangino system.
That's an interesting thought. I remember earlier this season when Jarvis West started to get more touches. At the time it was made very clear that that CPR had pretty much demanded it.
All the same, I just find it difficult to believe that he was told to look around and then basically failed into a job on Urban Meyer's staff. I guess we'll find out eventually.

Interesting. But it will be very lucky for him if he also ends up being the OC there if Meyer doesn't find someone better soon like hes trying to.
Believe it. Remember, 21 points per game does not seem too bad if in an archaic conference like the Big 10.
It's a downgrade if you look at it strictly from a job title perspective. But when you consider he's moving from a (currently) lower tier Big 12 team to a program with more prestige to work for an HC with more cachet and connections than CPR, then yeah, I can believe that he might have willingly made that move.
I disagree on that.
If he was hired as the OC yes then he moves willingly.
If his contract was not renewed then yes he takes the QB coach position.
If neither of these are true I don't know why he would take that job. He is OC of a B12 team that is up and coming. Finally he is getting some nice pieces to fit into his system. He was getting some good pub while coaching here as well so it is not like he was invisible.
Willingly demoting yourself is something to explain. Getting let go by your boss and you may not be asked to.

IMO, this is more about Herman being able to go back home and be a coach under Urban Meyer. It expands his resume. And Rhoads might have given Herman that it was possible he might need to move on. Maybe not right away but in the future if the offense did not take off. Herman might have decided it would be better to take the QB Coach job under Meyer and be back closer to home. Nothing wrong with that.
The names of Tony Franklin and Courtney Messingham have been brought up as Herman's replacement. Both seem very capable. Messingham has done a great job at everything he has been asked to do. Every unit he works with shows improvement. I could see Messingham being offered the job. Franklin seems to know the spread well. But definitely had his struggles at Auburn under TT. Of course TT seems to struggle everywhere he goes.
Those are the two favorites IMO. In CPR we trust to make the right choice.

I would do it in a heartbeat. Iowa State is not even close to the same league as Ohio State. As a coach I would jump at the chance to coach at someplace like Ohio State, and with the added bonus of coaching with Urban Meyer who is considered a coaching genius. So yeah, I would do it.
