Find it interesting that Brackens (true freshman) is backing up Benton.
If Shontrelle is our best option at KR then have him play it, we need big plays whenever we can get them, can't afford to miss a big play because we are worried about a possible injury. We have quality depth at RB, that would be the only reason not to have him return, if he is our best returner of course.
On another note, against power running teams on our schedule, I think you'll see the same linebacker switch as last year, Klein as SLB, Matt T as MLB, and Knott at WLB. This depth chart is just how we'll play against the majority of the teams on our schedule.

I can't help but remember our All Big XII corner Deandre Jackson getting his knee destroyed returning a kick against Oklahoma a few years ago. IMO... it just seems too risky to take your starting RB and open him up to that potential risk. I just don't like the idea of him having 11 guys running full speed downfield looking to take his head off.... how often do you see kick returners getting lit up? Far too often IMO.
I am on both sides. We have a lot of good options at RB so SJ getting hurt maybe isn't as big of a deal as it was with ARob two years ago. At the same time, he is still our starting RB and returning kicks is a high impact position to be in. Things happen especially fast and you can get hit hard. I would prefer we had someone else doing the job but if he's the best by a reasonable amount then I suppose you roll with him.
Tiller, Jennert, Brooks...not as specific losses, but as a trend developing. i hope that's not the case.
What the moves tell me is that we have a lot more versatility this year.. CJ Morgan is going to be a great weapon i think, playing that hybrid spot that TB has manned the last 2 years. This is going to be a fun defense. the secondary and LB's will be everywhere. Loaded with speed and talent back there. Anything that resembles a pass rush from the front 4 and we could be pretty salty... im so pumped
Really disappointed the staff never redshirted Guyer. It'd be a shame if they were both used this year and neither were ever redshirted to have for next year. I don't think we can retro-back a year for Guyer. Which means we have to get someone new for next year. I don't think we have any walk-ons capable of doing the job.
Look around the league, ladies (if there are any out there scouring the Cyclone fanatic football forum) & gentlemen. We compare more favorably this year (particularly on D) from a 'size' standpoint - LB's (pounds that is) as Clark Kellogg would say.
There are quite a few teams with basically 2 LBackers and 1 'hybrid' LB/S. With all of the spread offenses (whether pass happy or running), the field is more wide open and more is predicated on speed.
One of the freshmen last year Wally made a point to single out early on was CJ Morgan. I'm excited the staff believes he's ready to roll as a RFr. Also, I believe D Broomfield was known as a ball-hawk in HS, so I'd like to see him show that now when it matters at the collegiate level.

99% of the time I would be against SJ being the returner. But we are straight up stacked at RB. I'm still somewhat against it, but it wouldn't be nearly as frustrating as it would be any other year in the past.
I was up at the Scrimmage last Saturday and watched him. He is a specimen and hopefully will pan out. But to say he's raw is an understatement. He was going up against the 3's and never got a decent push into the backfield. I never saw him push anyone around or get through. Not saying he isn't going to be good, but in no way shape or form is he ready to play right now.
Let the kid redshirt and get some size, speed and technique under his belt. Based on what I saw, if he's playing this year, it's going to be a long year.....patience my friends!

I agree that we'll have a sort of hybrid with Morgan being able to easily drop or rush at his position. It'll be like running the Nickel without having to move Benton to the nickel spot and bring in Brackens at safety.
If you knew anything about kicking you would know that kicking a soccer ball and kicking a football are like apples and oranges.
