I just got this link in the Engineering Alumni e-news letter. Betrayed by my own kind!:skeptical:

'A few years ago, Iowa State studied "The Effectiveness of Iowa's Automated Red Light Running Enforcement Programs."

And how effective are they, especially when it comes to reducing accidents?

On Wednesday, the day the Des Moines Police Department called a news conference to say cameras would go live on designated city thoroughfares by the end of the work week, Shauna Hallmark, a university transportation engineer, needed two words to answer the question.
"Very effective," she said from Ames'

High cost causes people to think a bit about their actions, who woulda thunk.

I hear Iowa State has a slanted opinion, can't trust that information.

They are especially effective in reducing "T-bone" accidents, where one motorist runs a red light and hits the side of a car head on. These are obviously very dangerous accidents that often result in injuries and fatalities. In my opinion, reducing major accidents should always be the goal, even if they increase the frequency of minor accidents (which some studies have shown red light cams do, because of people rear-ending each other when they stop quickly) because fender-benders aren't a big deal, dents can be fixed, that's what insurance is for.

I've been bitten twice by the cameras in Council Bluffs over the past couple of years. (I think it was my wife both times) I didn't like it, but if you do the crime you should be willing to face the consequences.

And if the tickets were just for the flagrant offenders that blow through a red, most wouldnt have a problem. The problem is that for every 1 person you catch doing that, you ticket 100 who just didnt come to an unneeded complete stop on a right turn or just barely missed the light by overestimating the yellow length.

Don't care...

FREEDOM

I'm not seeing the problem here.

Making a ******** of money off of those that werent dangers to traffic at all, and would almost never be pulled over by a real officer? You dont see the problem with that?

Did you even bother to read the article? It said that tickets aren't issued if the officer(s) reviewing the tape wouldn't issue the ticket if they were there in person.

I experienced this earlier this week. I was pulled over on Duff and I was only going 30 mph... The officer then proceeded to give me a 127 dollar seatbelt ticket. I work on Duff and also live on Duff and it is literally a 1 min drive. I explained this to him but he still gave me a ticket. Honestly, I woulda thought he had something more worthwhile than giving somebody a seatbelt ticket going 30 mph

But but but, its easier to get mad. Heaven forbid people just slow down a bit and prepare to stop near a traffic light.

You broke the law didn't you?

I'll await your explanation to how, even if only a short distance, it's excusable to break the law.

No, it says that Hallmark believes that shouldnt happen. That does not mean that it does not happen. And the things they mention are not the things i mentioned. Did YOU bother to read the article?

So in other words, your "for every one person they properly ticket they improperly ticket 100 people" is a gross exaggeration then?

It's quite simple - if people like you simply followed the traffic laws on the books cameras like this would be unnecessary.

Nope, I'm just making wild allegations and pulling 1/100 numbers out of my ***.

Honestly, Idk how he could see if I had it on or not. I can understand if he pulled me over on the highway for not having a seatbelt because of the higher speeds.

You know as well as I do that if everybody got prosecuted according to every single little law it would be ridiculous. Generally there is some discretion involved. I just thought it was a little excessive. There are people that go way over the speed limit that are much more dangerous that could be focused on. Ticky-tack

Dont tell dmclone that! He would probably give up his fanhood is his honor of his fight against the "safety" of traffic cameras.

Speed cameras and red light cameras are two different things. The only reason I don't like red light cameras is because I would know that they would lead to speed cameras. If I had my way I would invent a camera for people not paying attention. Very few wrecks happen because of speeding. Not paying attention, tailgating, improper lane use, etc.
