*****Spring Game Post Game Thoughts*****

Best players on the field: AJ Klein, KO, Aaron Horne, Jacob Lattimer

Most impressive: Willie Scott-wow, he's fast. The play he scored on was sweet, he crushed Capello on an option. Jeremiah George- I didn't expect him to look better than Matt T, but he did (maybe because Matt was injured?). Brandon Jensen looked good.

Our D-line is athletic, they ran down multiple runs, and did a good job closing running lanes. I think its clear that the QB race is between Tiller and Jantz. For the first time ever I would be okay with TIller starting. Barnett and Capello have weak arms. Barnett would make the right throw, but it would end up in the dirt or behind the guy. RBs looked solid, Shontrelle and White are very fast. I like the blitz packages we ran with an LB and a Safety. It was nice to see a reciever make a play on the ball. I wasn't really paying attention to the secondary, but Matt Thomas made a couple plays.

Hey there - my opinion, and that of maybe a few others, differs from yours. So what? Please stop the lecturing, and maybe you should apply your need to be a control freak somewhere else?

I don't have a problem having differing opinions but when you said he was challenging the coaches on that, it was wrong. I don't have a problem with him saying he wants to know as soon as possible and I don't think there is any underlying reason for him saying that. Everything I have heard about Jerome is that he is a good teammate. Was him saying he thinks he has done enough perhaps poorly worded? It probably was. He should have said ti different but I just don't see the problem in him saying he thinks he's the best option for the team. That's all.

I'd like to add that AJ looked REALLY good. He looked faster, and when he was in it seemed like he owned the field. If Jake is still as good/better than AJ we have the best pair of LBs in the Big 12.

As of right now, Tiller has done enough to be #1. Problem is... that still isn't going to cut it in the Big 12. I do feel for JT a bit though. Nobody wants him to win this job, and some days it seems not even the coaches want him to win it either?

Tiller was easily the best QB on the field yesterday. I'm not saying he was great, far from it, but he was easily the best one we had yesterday. If the first game of the season was this coming Saturday, I'd want JT to be the starter. So why shouldn't Rhoads come out and say that JT is in the lead right now? He has done enough to be #1 as of right now.

Obviously most of us hope that someone (even JT) improves their play enough this summer to grab this job by the horns. I don't care who it is, but someone needs to. If anyone seriously thinks Jantz was the best QB out there yesterday, they are crazy. We couldn't win more than 2 games right now if the season started this coming weekend and Jantz was the starter. He has a long ways to go still I'm afraid. I'm hopeful it will all start clicking for him after another 4 months. If not, be prepared for JT to be the starter, because like I said, right now he's the best we got. Face the facts. Jantz may not be the savior we were all hoping for. Or maybe he will. Who knows?

This is very accurate. I don't think we are going to have much better than average QB play no matter who starts. The only hope for someone to come in make a huge difference at that position, IMO is Jantz. I still think that could happen once he gets comfortable. He looks pretty hesitant out there right now. I still think everyone is in the race, but I think the top two have created a little separation.

I don't get some people saying this. I would say Jantz and Tiller are probably on Arnauds level right now. We won 7 and 5(coulda won more) games with AA. I know it might sound like blasphamy on this site, but Arnaud was a pretty average/below average QB. I don't think we are taking a step back at QB at all.

I'm with yaman. Having different opinions is one thing, but making broad assumptions about a players attitude is another. The bit of speech referenced is out of context, and there are no clues of body language, facial expression, or tone. Believe it or not, that phrase could be stated without being a bad teammate. This is when message boards get really stupid...

I thought tiller looked the best yesterday and that was even with a bum elbow. However, there is still alot of time before we play a real game and things can change.

My only worry is that the team divides like they did when Austin Flynn and Waye Terry were competing for the starting job a few years ago. When one was named the starter some offensive players said screw it and didn't put forth very good effort.

Always bringing the drama.

I am guessing the coaches not naming JT the starter has more to do with that they do not think JT is the clear Number 1 after watching him for more than 2 hours. If what you said is true about him not cutting it in the Big 12, that could be another reason to keep the competition as wide open as possible.
Then again, your insinuation could be correct and the staff is corrupt in their intent to not name JT #1.

One thing to remember about all QB's from yesterday is that they were playing in wind that they will not see for 11/12 games, plus not finding a rhythm due to rotating. I suspect that any of them would look better with different conditions and not being platooned. Even with the bad arm, JT looked better than in the past. Finally, as young guys and newcomers, they should improve in the next 4.5 months more than a 2-year starter going into their senior season.

He also said yesterday that he feels he's 'done enough" to be the #1 QB...

Maybe he has, but coaches like competition. None of our qbs will set the world on fire at this point, especially with receivers dropping balls like they are hot potatoes.

Tiller's day could easily have been worse. Klein and LJ both dropped passes threw by Tiller that hit them in the hands.
Maybe those two guys should join our receiver corps. Hey, when will we get better at catching passes? Money and Aaron use their hands well. The other not as well.

did you forget Jantz had a prety bad pass as well but its only spring and we should stop getting all worked up.

My thoughts after spending the last 3 weeks in Ames. It's a great college town! I just wish more of the students got excited about football like we do here in Texas. The campus has roughly 30,000 but less than 3,000 were at the game. That needs to change. Maybe good football will do it. I figured the QB battle would, guess I wax wrong. But overall, I enjoyed it!

1. QB's: Tiller showed promise, he was the best statistically. Obviously, he has some camaraderie that the others don't have. That's expected, he's been there the longest. Steele looked the worst of all of them. He had 1 good play all day and 5 bad ones. The bad ones are what we call game-losers. He's got to do a whole lot better! However, my expectations have never been that high for him....he's played 1 year in the past 5 years. Barnett had the worst of his three scrimmages passing wise. However, he did have drop by Lenz on a screen on 3rd down, and two by Gary on a slant and a screen that ended drives with the 1's and twice with the 2's. He also had another drive going with the 1's that ended when Shontrelle fumbled after an 8 yard run. He show arm strength when he rifled a 25 yard pass into Lenz, going into the wind, between 2 defenders. Also, they all scramble well but he is the best read-runner in the zone game. He did have an Int. But so did SJ. JC, played well at times, and had some extended drives, but he has obviously been passed up by JB.

2. RB's-they all did some good things. James White was most impressive to me. Duck is still nursing a hip injury so he wasn't full strength, Woody was Woody.....my hero!

3. WR's- Horne got a lot of chances and made the most if them. Blanton showed he could stretch the field on the post route that was overthrown. He was 3-4 steps behind the defender.

4. OL- 1's were ok, 2's were average in protection (Jensen had a field day with the right tackle) but good in the RG.

Excited the the QB competition is going into the summer. We should see some guys mature and develop and I look forward fall camp. May the best guy come out on top and the CyclOnes go bowling!!!

1.)Barnett started off very strong, he lost his hot hand in the rotating imo. If that was indeed his worst performance, and from the listening to the staff it may have been, he should be in the mix. He is like Jantz in that the payback from giving him reps should be high.
2nd best potential to improve and the 2nd best performance imo, which is why I think he should be given a serious look. From what I heard at the game he has really come on.

2.)Duck didn't look like he had in the videos. Hopefully this is true, because we need a complete back. All look good though. I like Woody, but I hope he is utilized as our fullback and when we need someone to set a tone. White or Duck need to emerge as #2 (or 1b).

4.)Agreed. A lot of youth so a little undersized at some spots, but the future looks good. Adding Tuftee and the hurt JuCo should help. If we only Haughton would have worked out- this line would be upper-level Big 12.

No he isn't. he said he wants to know as soon as possible. He didn't say he should know by now. OK, so he says he thinks he done enough to be the starter. So what? What do you want him to say? Do you want him to say that he probably doesn't deserve it? He also said yesterday he still has room to improve as well but that isn't mentioned anywhere. Quit making something out of nothing.

I agree with you ! Leaders always want to know where they are(or stand) and when they can do more .. That is how I took his comments ? Also when you play college sports you have to have some self love , otherwise you wouldnt make it people tear you up . Also someone to level you so you dont get too high.

Still sounds like to me Jantz will be the guy if he gets a better grasp of the offense this summer... but as of now its still Tillers to lose.

I disagree with people saying Jantz has the higher ceiling. He and Tiller both are 3 years older than Barnett and 2 years older than Capello. However, I would say Barnett is right there with them skill-wise, football knowledge, and athletic ability. I expect them to have a little stronger arm. They're 3 years older. JB should have the most upside simply due to what I just mentioned.

Sam Richardson has the most upside. Start Jantz or Tiller then let Rich do his thing after that. If Barnett wins it will be hard to give an unproven QB like Richardson the nod over him. Obviously if Barnett was our best QB this year then you start him, but it sounds like he isn't.
