haha sure felt that way tonight. Hopfully mahoney doesn't get boo'd his senior day like yelk did when he took the field.
They are essentially the same player. Great leg, love 'em on kick offs, but they're completely unreliable on field goals.
It just shows you how mental kicking is. Once you go down the road Grant has gone down the latter half of this year, it's tough to get back on track. He'll be better next year.
You guys realize it was windy as hell tonight, right? Nobody is more frustrated than Grant I'm sure, and he is giving it his all. You must have forgotten that monster kick in the first half against Nebraska already huh?
Mahoney is a lot better than Yelk but the wind is no excuse for missing that short field goal.
He's a good kid, and a good kicker. Before tonight, he only missed one inside 40, and tonight was really windy. Rough night for him, but the fact is that he's attempted a lot of long, long field goals this year, and that accounts for his overall low accuracy.
Bull **** it was windy as hell. The things on top of the goal posts weren't even moving.

Agreed. That wind shouldn't affect anything on the field. I occasionally felt a cool breeze, but I had to move my hands to create it.
I was in the front row and checked the flags on the goal posts multiple times. The wind was not an excuse tonight.
The first kick I was shocked got down considering the holder got it over his head. The way the ball was spinning on the kick, I don't think it got put down straight. The second kick Mahoney just flat out missed.

Hey, I'm agreeing here.
Another way to note the lack of wind would be the ball on the tee for kickoffs. On a windy night, everyone ends up with holders at the tee, since the wind blows the ball off the tee. We didn't see that tonight.
I still can't believe he missed that bunny chip-shot FG.

I don't give two ***** what the wind is doing. Missing from 27 and 38 is inexcusable. A good kicker should be able to adjust to what the conditions call for. Especially from those distances.
Mahoney just completed his 3rd season with the Cyclones. From his freshman to sophomore and sophomore to junior campaigns, the number of field goal attempts has decreased every year. But his conversion percentage has also decreased every year. Meaning, while attempting fewer field goals, he's missing more field goals.
2008: 17 for 25, 68%
2009: 13 for 20, 65%
2010: 8 for 17, 47%
His point total has also decreased every year. He scored 84 points as a freshman (17 field goals, 33 extra points,) on a 2-10 team. He scored 65 points last year, and scored 56 points this year (8 field goals, 32 extra points.) He made as many field goals as freshman (17) as he attempted as a junior.
Percentages tell you nothing. If he's 7/8 inside 50 and 1/9 outside 50, that's a bit deceiving. Points also tell you nothing. If the offense isn't good, it doesn't matter for the kicker. Our offense has struggled immensely a few times this year moving the ball. Nothing the kicker can do about that.
Alex Henery is a good kicker because
a) he has a good long snapper
b) he has a good holder
c) he gets make-able kicks. I think his only miss on the year was from 54.

Alex Henery is also a good kicker because he is an alumni of the Midwest Kicking Camps, but hey, that's a biased statement on my part.
And percentages tell a lot. Mainly, they tell if a kicker is reliable or not.
