Jon Miller's BTN show gets canned

Holy overreaction!
So you think that 2-5 hours of ISU bashing has no effect on ISU alumni that live in the Des Moines area? None at all? Or do you think being in conference USA would have little effect on ISU? Do you seriously think we would draw 43K annually to a football game? You don't think that has an effect on Ames and ISU as a whole?

Just curious because someone is asking me to be sympathetic for a guy that was cheering for ISU to drop into Conference USA. I understand what effect that would have on the University as a whole and the City of Ames and its businesses. It would reduce income and that money would have to come from somewhere else. Why should I feel sorry because jonny lost his Big 10 gig? He sucked and openly rooted for ISU to be hurt and therefore openly rooted against anyone that makes their living from ISU's success. I normally don't feel sympathetic for people that suck at their job and ridicule others. Let alone that he openly cheers for my Universities failures. If I sucked at my job, I wouldn't expect people to feel sorry for me.

I don't feel sorry for Jon one iota...

That said, if Tazclone was doing the morning show, and the university of iowa was in ISU's position, would you pile on? Say Iowa was facing a demotion to Conf USA, could you be objective?

I know for a FACT i'd drill the hawks into the turf if given the chance. Even if i TRIED to be fair, i'd surely come across as smug and sarcastic. I can't be any other way to the Hawks... Jon struck me as the same way.

It's impossible for me to hope for anything but pestilence towards Iowa...

I grew up a hok fan in a hok household. I also know that if iowa were to get kicked out of the big 10 that it would hurt the state of Iowa and ISU. We share the same tax base and the same Board of Regents. College football brings a ton of $$ into the state. It is the biggest reason I want to keep the iowa/ISU game going. So no, I would not openly root/cheer everyday for 2-3 weeks for iowa to fall to a lesser conference. I would throw jab in here or there but I would not want that for iowa or there fans. I do hope we kick their arse every time, though

Also, if I claimed to be a journalist/reporter and there was story that broke that iowa would get an invite to the Big East (Not conference USA), I would report it and discuss it. But then that is me. That honestly is the biggest gripe I have against Jon

So if some of you lose your jobs and people make fun of it online - that's ok?

Classy stuff.

I'm not making fun of Jon, its more like constructive criticism. Maybe after reading this thread, he'll become a better sports talk guy, thats more humble and kinder to ISU...

  1. If I lost my job because I sucked...go right ahead and ridicule. I have sucked at jobs before. Good thing, is I knew it, left the job and found something I was good at. I had no issue with people telling me I sucked. Fact is, I did.
  2. This isn't Jon's only income and he has stated he will be just fine
  3. See all the other reasons, I don't like Jon
  4. There are plenty of people that I don't like because of their narcisism. I have no problem with those people getting knocked down a notch.

Perfectly fine. Especially considering Miller's occupation is largely based on being critical of others on a medium that reaches a wider demographic.

Although Miller likes to intertwine the two, there is a difference between making fun of, and stating why something is subpar.

Interesting that some of the same people on CF that are so quick to feel the need to whine about negative comments about Miller on a limited audience medium like a message do not understand why some protest malicious actions by those on channels with much larger audiences.

I agree it is great for the schools (not great for consumer protection). I have read that the BTN did not turn a profit the first few years, but it may just depend on how you do the accounting.

This is like a Jon Miller back-handed compliment.
That said, I agree Jon needs his co-host to have a personality (because he does not have one).

I'm not going to go so far as to say that Jon does not have a personality, but I agree with your sentiment here. On Miller & Deace, Jon's role was pretty specific. He was the "everyman" that Deace was imparting his knowledge on. Jon typically would start a segment by putting forth his point of view, which was generally pretty safe/conventional, and then Deace would spend 15 minutes blowing holes in it with his "massive intellect."

It worked.

But at the BTN, he doesn't have Deace, so he has to tread water on his own. The ensuing results speak to how well that worked out.

I love it... The first time I post something negative about jon miller, I get a hard time. Yet when he spends nearly two months rubbing the big 10 expansion in our faces for his own personal and professional benefit, there are some on this board feeling sorry for him.

Cyclone fans really are too nice...

I think you need to step away from the ledge because 99% of people don't put anywhere near the stock you do in this guy's opinions. Miller & Deace was listenable sports talk radio that centered heavily on local college football. Nothing less and definitely nothing more. I for one would welcome his return to my podcast rotation and think it sucks that he left his show for an opportunity that didn't pan out for him.

But you're right, I am sure that JP and Geoffrey have spent many sleepless nights sweating Jon Miller and Matt Perrault's one man guerilla campaigns to bring down a 150+ year old state institution. At their WORST they are just arrogant blowhards, and
I don't think Jon is even that.

I don't think he ever rubbed it in anyone's face, he just had no faith that ISU would pull through it in a positive fashion. There is a difference, and a LOT of people on this board had the same opinion.

well, that show lasted long!

congrats on being an unlikable tool jon. turns out the 15-20 posters on HN weren't enough to boost the BTN's ratings like they had hoped.

You probably should have listened to those podcasts more closely and more often.

I tried to check out this Hawkeye Nation website you guys are talking about and I got multiple virus warnings!

I wont try that again.

Stay classy. The guy just lost his job.
