I actually agree with the majority of the OP.. It never made sense to me why a team would undercut the significance of their win by starting the "overrated" chant. But I dont think the majority of ISU fans are anywhere near the mindset that these two statements echo:

I think we usually would have a lot more at this game if we did not have one at Notre Dame in a few weeks.
I know that myself and most "Common middle class" Ute fans spent our wad on getting to Southbend and saving for the bowl game trip.
You will probably see 1000 or so Utes there. Hopefully more.
ALOT has been said about the Utes overall record, The weakness of our opponents etc. Regardless of how bad our opponents have been there is one solid fact,
The Utes play who they play. Schedule is what the schedule is.
The Numbers are pretty concrete. I can tell You that I am a bit nervous about this game though.
I can float your boat and tell You how amazing the Clones looked against TT.
We can talk about our teams opponents Overall records.
It is an internet message board.
But I have one bit of advice for all Cyclone fans.
We know what You are going through!
That was us 10 years ago. We were damn good, But so inconsistent.
Then our culture began to change, Much like your's is doing now.
Our stadium began to fill up, Our wins got bigger, Our students came back, Old timers like me started having a hard time buying tickets to games.
The ONLY thing I regret about the last 10 years is not building up every opponent we beat. Everytime a top 25 team would get beat by us our crowd would chant OVERRATED! OVERRATED! Well great!
We didn't beat them because we were damn good, But only because they were overrated.
So as a bit of advice, From someone that has seen the Lowest of lows and the Highest of highs.
Wether it be Utah, Texas, K-state, Oklahoma, Iowa.
Just remember they are the best team that You have faced to that point in any given year. And they are the ONLY opponent taking the field against You that week.
You wonder why Utah fans are respectful and think the world of Your program
We have conditioned ourselves to be that way.
We know full well that if our team does not play to it's potential the Cyclones are going to take us to the woodshed.
How is your Fan base going to look at the game?
if #10 Utah comes to Ames and gets worked by the Cyclones this weekend will You come running back to this board to say hahahahahahaha SEE i WAS RIGHT! No way that was a top 10 school!!!!

Have pride in your school.Look at the big picture.
Whether You think we deserve it or not.
The University of Utah Utes are #10 in the Nation.
Quit tellin us we dont deserve it because we have not played anyone just prove You are better.

Good post, but you also need to realize that what you read on any message board does not reflect an entire fan base. There will always be people on both sides that pull the "I told you so.......overrated.......would, coulda, shoulda crap." It's very hard for me to believe that your entire fan base has been conditioned to be very respectful of all opponents, even if you and some others posting on this site are.
Most cyclone fans I know are very respectful of all opponents, regardless of whether or not we ever get respect for the positive things we achieve. We've had many high's and low's over the past 10-12 years in both football and basketball, so we are a pretty humble group, but have also tasted success which breeds higher expectations.
