Fact is, isu is less and less a 'country' school than ever. I knew waaaay more people from des moines, minneapolis, or chicago than who were from the country. I just dont think we should play into the stereotype of all being hicks out here, where the tv crews play images of tractors in the fields during the games.
What % of ISU graduates end up back on a farm?it might be "less and less a country school than ever". But it still is one.
I hate the Sweet Caroline tradition. Would be better to replace it with something a little more exciting than that. You could always do ACDC - Thunderstruck or something like that.. based on the reception when it comes on at any bar, I'm sure fans would be all for it.
A better comparison would be how many go on to agricultural-related jobs, whether it be in a rural or urban area? What % of ISU graduates end up back on a farm?
What percentage end up in des moines or larger cities?

I don't think anyone is suggested that we do a reenactment of Hee Haw (though Pfft You Were Gone could be fun), but to deny the agricultural roots that run through Iowa State and that still continue to this day is ridiculous. It's not saying anyone who attended Iowa State is a hayseed yokel, but I'd hate for the University to completely turn its back on its heritage.
Because urbanites don't like country music (and living on a farm automatically means you do? I'll tell my husband that, who hates Country music with a passion. He's more into Anger Rock)?? I don't even think I'd consider John Denver Country. He's more Folk. Or maybe something by Johnny Cash. Everyone loves the Man in Black, don't they? And id say making our victory song something country would be the former.

I don't care if it's original or not. Sweet Caroline is hardly original (Red Sox 8th inning ritual anyone?) and people love that. But the point isn't that it has to be original as far as NEVER played in any other stadium, just that it's tied to that school for a certain time in the game.because nobody has used thunderstruck before...
how about a little more originality?

I'm not saying it's even half. But alarson was trying to compare alumni who go back to farm vs alumni who live in cities. That's an unfair comparison - very few people total are farming at all. I am simply saying alumni in ag-related fields is a better one.I GUARANTEE a lot less than you think. Ag related careers is definitely overblown at ISU and is in the minority of what our grads go on to do. Only 1 of all the people I was close to at ISU went into an ag related field. And I know a TON of ISU alum now and only a small handful work in ag related careers.

It also greatly depends on your college and who you know. I'd say out of the alumni I know, probably about 1/3 are in some ag-related field.
It doesn't really matter, because we're all arguing straw men at this point.
I was talking about this with some guys, and thought CF would be a good place to get some more input/possibly get the ball rolling.
ISU is admittedly lacking in game day traditions. One thing I've always loved is when schools have a victory song like Alabama/"Sweet Home Alabama", West Virginia/"Country Roads Take me Home", Tennessee/"Rocky Top" and even (yes I admit I'm jealous as hell of this) Iowa/"In Heaven There is no Beer".
We've started doing the "Sweet Caroline" thing, but I think it's kind of fad. A lot of other schools do it, and it's right up there with "Livin' on a Prayer" as a cheesy song it's become cool/funny to like over recent years.
I know it's probably a bit of a cheesy song, but I think it's a great fit for ISU, given the school's ag programs and the fact that a lot of students/alumni/fans have connections to rural Iowa, but I think "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" would be a great ISU victory song. Other songs that guys threw out there were "Roll out the Barrel" (Brewers song) and the official State song of Iowa ("that's where the tall corn grows"). Any thoughts or song suggestions?
