Granted this is a little more rah rah than most alma maters, but when have you ever seen anything with anywhere close to this much tradition and emotion in Jack Trice?

It's all about crowd participation and getting everyone involved. Texas A&M and Wisconsin are 2 of the best. The crowd will stay after the game to participate. As you can see in the Aggie video the stands are completely full. That is impressive stuff.
 
The thing that everyone is forgetting about Eyes of Texas and the Aggie War Hymn, is that those are pretty much their fight songs, at least Aggie War Hymn. They played it after every touchdown and before and after the game.

What the A&M fans and players are doing is more analogous to everyone in JTS singing Fights, as opposed to Bells of Iowa State.
 
The big thing I want changed is that freaking stop on third down and we force them to punt:

Cue "Wicked Witch of the West" Music.

That, and CY - CLONES yelled right after the Kick off:

"Ohhhhhh - (the kick) - CY - CLONES!!!"
 
I would like to hear "Bad Boys" or whatever the Cops show song is called, when the team is getting ready to enter. "What you gonna do when we come for you...." Jingle the keys to make like handcuff keys/cell door keys. Or maybe not that part.
 
My only problem with the third down song is that it feels to me like we're always backed up against our goal and it's played right before the other team scores. It's sort of Pavlovian how I don't like it.

True. I am just looking for examples of crowd participation that JTS severely lacks. It is this kind of "tradition" that we need. I don't care what song it is either. We just need to find something and then get everyone to do it. It is one thing to just attend the game. It is an entirely foreign idea at ISU for fans to actually be a part of the game. Sure the crowd cheers for big plays etc... but what fan base doesn't do that? Crowd participation throughout the game will make the atmosphere much more exciting and will make for a much better gameday experience which will bring in new fans and keep the current fans coming.

I believe you are correct in regards to the Aggies, but the UT fight song, "Texas Fight", is not the same as the alma mater "Eyes of Texas"

They take some musical cues from each other that help tie them together, but they are different songs. The various ISU school songs do the same thing.

Exactly. Sorta off topic now, but on third down in our red zone, if the opponent gets a first down, we become silent again (unless of course it gets back to third down).
 
To me, The Bells of Iowa State is just another song that most people don't know the words to. I understand it has sentimental value to the band folks and I respect that and appreciate it. I wish the rest of the students/alumni felt that way about the song, but they/we just plain and simple don't.

Aggie War Hymn yes. Eyes of Texas is played before, after, and on 4th downs. Texas Fight is the fight song.

Put up the video of the team and Kyle singing "The Spirit of Aggieland" together - that was incredible.

Other than that, I was hoping to spin the band up with some jabs at "Bells" for a break this afternoon. Glad to see it worked. Kinda proves the point, though - the people defending it are all in or connected to the band. Is it really a "school" tradition if only the band is doing it? Pregame - everyone's into Fights, God Bless America, then Bells starts and everyone is just standing and talking - I was usually only one of 5 or 10 people in my vicinity singing it - then everyone gets back into Fights.

I'm with aeroclone. Get the word out to the fans, hammer the lyrics and meaning into everyone, and "Bells" will be an awesome tradition. Until then, it's always going to be a band thing.
 
I agree the key is fan participation. I don't think it would be hard to get started either. Just go back 3 or 4 years ago. Sweet Caroline didn't exist. Neither did the "Cyclone Power" chant. The student section didn't participate in Cyclone Aerobics or Cowbell either. All it took was just a little work to get the message out, and those traditions have taken hold very nicely. Some added emphasis on the alma mater or the addition of a victory song would catch on pretty fast as well, I think. Just get the students started and let it spread.

This is all rather silly. There is no third down defensive cheer. The band has a multitude of cheers that we can play. For the record, we hardly ever play "Throwdown", I'm pretty sure what you are thinking of is "Mars".
Has anyone ever seen the student section during "Sweet Caroline"? They love it! They all dance. Everyone in the band dances. Why kill something that the students actually get into?
Lastly, you can't make a tradition. Traditions happen.
Get over it.

That is simply because if we give up a first down in the red zone it is automatically assumed that we won't be able to stop them from scoring at that point. At some point we have to break through the doubt of being a program and fan base that is so pre-conditioned to expect that we are going to get our brains beat in every game. ****.... last year we had people seriously worried about North Dakota State. Fans worrying not that the game would be close but that we might get beat. This can't be our attitude and I don't pretend that those thoughts don't run through my mind as well but we should thoroughly go into every game expecting to win. We may look dumb expecting to win against teams like Texas and OU but if you don't think you can win.... you won't.
 
The words to bells are always on two of the little score board things on the sides of the stadium. For some reason I have a memory of them also putting it over top of the video on the big score board...for some reason that seems too good to be true though.

The lyrics can be found both on the main videoboard and the two side boards while the song is being played. Been that way for several years.

I even remember it being there two scoreboards ago -- back in the mid-80s when "colored message centers" were the hot new thing.

I'm aware the lyrics are displayed. I have been to a few ISU games before.

Still, that's not hammering them in or expressing meaning. The fact that they've been displayed at every game for 25+ years and STILL nobody knows the words suggests to me that it's not an effective method, don't you think?

*edit* not to mention the scoreboards are usually mistimed relative to the band...
