Does anyone know if I need to watch the Band of Brothers series before getting into this new show on HBO?

Thanks.

You do not need to watch Band of Brothers first. The Pacific is a completely separate show.

You should watch Band of Brothers though. It is a great series.

Good start to the series. I would recommend reading "Helmet for my Pillow" and "With the Old Breed" before watching. It is interesting how they are tying the books and author (Leckie and Sledge) together, not to mention John Basilone. Not to mention, it appears they blended to separate battles together in tonight's episode. I think it would have been more powerful to show the alligators, that caused people to starting shooting; as well as eating the dead and dying in the river ala Leckie book.

Thought the first episode was solid. Looks like this series will do a great job of showing what a miserable experience the island battles of the Pacific theater were. Tonight's episode was just the tip of the iceberg.

BOB is an all-time great. I watch it every Memorial Day weekend.

This show was amazing, i had the DVR set and probalby going to record them and give it to my grandpa for his birthday, he served in the war on the USS Edward C Daley. he always tells me his war stories, i love it, i'm sure he will love this.

So who watched it? Thoughts?

To this point, not really liking the story. There wasn't much of one. What I mean is that they did almost nothing to introduce who the characters were (or if they were real as in BoB).

Got to the end, started watching the credits roll, and I didn't have a clue who any of them were - unlike Winters, Sobel, Guarnere, Malarky etc and so on.

Not a good job by the writers IMO.

Other than that, the production of the series is amazing. Riveted during the first engagement. The effects are outstanding and it's more on par w/ Private Ryan in scope than BoB. Looking forward to the rest.

I agree. So far, I don't think this will be as good as BoB. Cast isn't as good, storyline was a little less personal, although it's just one episode so that can change.

Writing and acting seemed a little more awkward.

I actually liked the story so far, i think when the action picks up like towards the last half hour of the show when the Japs (Japanese) ambushed them was rather good, Would however liked to have this story be based more in Europe like Saving Private Ryan.

I think the story will pickup once that kid back home gets there - which it appears will happen - given the previews. It'll get alot more depth. But to this point, there's no dynamic between them.

The only name I picked up the whole show was JP Morgan - but just because of the obvious brand naming. Not sure which one he is?

The guy behind the machine gun, and with the .45 in the shooting gallery - appears to be this show's Capt Winters. What's his name?

The naval battle was amazing.

You want the series "The Pacific" to be based more in Europe? Umm, wouldn't that pretty much be defeating the entire point of the series?
