No, but he's not as worthless as some on this board consistently suggest. He's not a below-average point guard (relative to other B12 PGs) at all.
Brackins and Gilstrap also aren't below-average at their positions, meaning there are some problems with the 2 and 5 spots.
Where is he at on the turnover rate? Watch him play defense for a little while. When they were trapping at the end of the game he gets pushed around like hes not even there. There is more to playing point guard then assist to turnover ratio.
Dogus Balbay, who is probably one of the top 3 PGs in the conference.

Agree. I was not impressed with DG early on when he was a freshman. McDermott has effectively banked his ISU career on Garrett as the point guard and it has been a failure and I do not see it improving. Mac has not had a plan B other than Buckley which is not promising. Kind of like a football coach saying this is my QB win or lose or a bb manager saying here is the pitcher that is going to take us to the world series.
The point guard play is not working nor is the overall sense of urgency with this team. There are other issues such as rebounding, team itdentity, etc.
I think it is time to start over. Our coach is a nice guy and his players seem to play that way. We need a nasty coach with a mean streak.
Well then it must also be coaching that is below-average because we are a below average team this year and clearly a below average team in the past 3 years.
I'm with you man. I don't get why there is so much hate on DG. Dogus Balbay can't hit anything out of a layup.
The last handful of Texas games I have watched he hasn't even started, so you are claiming our PG is in the top tier of Big XII point guards and you are comparing him to a backup. But you are correct Balbay is one that doesn't need to be guarded . SInce Doug Gottlieb graduated I don't know of another. I am sure there have been a few, but you get my point.
Honest question if you could only have 1 for your team DG or Balbay which do you pick?
I know which I would, but we have to love with the one were with. However, Balbay is much better than DG at penetrating and either dishing and finishing so he is less of an offensive liability not to mention he is better defensively. So with what more he brings to the table I would rate him ahead of DG. . It also helps that his liability shooting isn't as great of a concern for his team as he is surrounded by much better talent. When he is on the floor Texas normally has 4 other legitimate scoring threats - the exception being when Mason is playing along side him. ISU has 2 legitimate scoring threats on the roster with Lucca gone and JVB hurt.
In a post yesterday someone asked why we struggled getting the ball to Brackins so much more this year than last. We simply don't have a consistent enough threat from the outside to make anyone respect us save for Lucca. Now that option is gone and it will clog up that much more.
I really like what Buckley brought to the table tonight and having a hint of being able to hit an uncontested 20' foot jump shot certainly should get him more playing time. I was stunned with the lack of minutes he got in the second half.

I wouldn't go that far. Balbay is a nice player, like I said, probably one of the top 3 PGs in the B12.
But I do think DG is better than the PGs at Nebraska, Colorado, Mizzou, OSU, and would compete well with the PGs at A&M and Tech and possibly Baylor and Oklahoma.

I'm a huge Cyclone fan, but we haven't had a point guard since Blaylock was here... there must not be any out there...
A good athlete makes plays, passes, shots, dribbling, etc. look easy... whether it be guard, forward, or center... enough said.
Ripping on the PG after a loss is like ripping on a QB after a loss. They are perceived as being in control of the outcome of the game. I've never understood the constant bashing of DG or the blind love for CC. I haven't seen CC do anything amazing to justify the love he's getting. Most of the time when he has the ball, he's out of control. Of the three potential starting PGs on this team, DG is currently the best. He had a tough night last night.
