Well, it's because he's more of a public figure. If Dendy was on the swim team, would we really care? Probably not and he's still be a public figure. Would our national exposure and revenue change THAT much if we were talking about the swim team? Probably not..
We care because we think he's potentially very good, can help ISU win more games, thus increasing our national exposure and ranking, thus helping us get better recruits, thus increasing fans' happiness levels, thus increasing ticket sales, thus increasing ISU's revenue.
It pretty much all comes down to money. I'm sure people on the "lesser stage" sports miss all the time due to personal reasons (albeit not flying out without telling anybody) but nobody really talks about it because it doesn't affect revenue too much.
(What I do and what Dendy does is complete opposite. I still have a big influence on money and whether you agree with it or not, a reputation for my company to keep. I still have commitments that can completely screw over a company I'm consulting with and they can lose business as a result too AND their reputation can go way down if we don't deliver on behalf of them. I might not be a public figure (I am only to a certain audience, not to the general public), but there is still influence, reputation, and revenue on both sides of the coin. Completely different though.....point is that it all comes down to money and happiness for the most part).
