Talked to a friend today who has a source at the Iowa Energy. An assistant coach who does a little scouting. He saw Gilstrap recently and said he is the real deal. Said he is a VERY good player and Iowa State got a good one.

Watched Brackins and Gilstrap go one on one with a two dribble limit...Very entertaining.

But we know it takes at least two years for a player to learn all of McD's plays.:jimlad:

He was also impressed with the freshman PG. I assume he meant Colvin. Stopped just short of comparing him to Tinsley. A bit premature but nice to hear.

That would be kinda funny having a college BB team play 6 on 6 rules as a drill.

Actually that drill can be really intense, especially if you take away all dribbles. We used to do all kinds of drills like these when I was coaching. My favorite was 3 vs. 2 on each side of the court. Players had teammates past half court but couldn't cross the line. Hard to explain online but it helped reinforce our full court 1-2-1-1 press.

We did the two dribble limit for a majority of our offensive drills. Makes kids be explosive with the dribble and not screw around.

Yeah we do 4 on 4 full court with a 1 dribble limit almost daily...forces them to see the floor and think what they're going to do before they get the ball, and also to go somewhere with their 1 dribble...

Saw a Cap City League game this summer with Gilstrap and Barnes guarding each other. Neither one could stop the other and they both probably had around 40. That was fun to watch!

I just hope that Gilstrap can live up to even half the hype he's getting. Honestly, if he's good for about 10-15 points a game, and also a solid rebounder and defender, then that's going to be enough of a contributrion to help us win a lot of games.

The big thing with Gilstrap for me is can he defend Big 12 wings? I, too, think he will score well for us, but if he's giving up 20 a game to the guy he's guarding, it's all for naught.

His D will be the biggets question mark. Even McAAs out HS usually have all the offense they want but their D is poor. I'm guessing Gilstrap's D is better than a kid out of HS but probably not to McDs standards.

This summer in the capital city league I watched Gilstrap and HB go at it for an entire half. One of the most entertaining matchups I have ever seen. Gilstrap played good defense, but neither of them seemed to be able to stop the other consistently. He easily has the quickness and size to play good defense, and I think with McD's coaching he will be a force on D. I guess we'll wait and see

I just realized that if use some of our Hawk friends point of view, we will not just be good, we are contenders for the national title. Man that's awesome!!
