New Laptop

I wouldn't buy anything with Vista unless it comes with a free 7 upgrade path.

Just reformat and put on XP. I bought an HP a couple months ago and did that. Everything seems to be working fine.

Yeah if you enjoy watching a pretty spinning color wheel.
The pinwheel of death officially turned me into a PC guy. Before that ****ing pinwheel, I didn't care what I used, as long as it had the interweb.

Student versions are cheap.

Again, if you have access to them. Pirated versions are too for that matter.

Point being, probably don't want to be stuck on a machine with Hasta la Vista on it.

I still haven't had any Vista problems on either machine running it. The Windows 7 sounds more promising, but I haven't experienced any PETA kids' site style breakdowns. (Of course, that site was probably done on a Mac.)

Vista isn't an overly problematic OS. Most average home users probably won't experience problems with it. The biggest issue though, for the average home user, is that eventually lack of driver and third party software support for it is likely to become an issue.
