Where's the sweet corn?

I think we usually have those roadside stands selling sweet corn by late June, but I haven't seen any this year. Anybody know how long until we have sweet corn? I'm sure the cool wet spring delayed things, but it's going to be a disappointing 4th of July without sweet corn.

I saw a stand at the JC's on EP True/Mills/35th/Valley West, and it looked to have some ears of corn on it. I usually wait for the peaches and cream stuff to come from Grimes.

I agree though, it does seem to be bit late. I can imagine that with all the rain down south that some of the fields are pretty waterlogged; this week will help them out.

wouldn't that mean that the corn would be in earlier:confused:

Yes it would.

I think the rather wet and very cool spring slowed things down. I know it did a number on my tomatoes and peppers.

SuperTarget in Urbandale had sweetcorn right inside the front doors on the market side.

10 ears for $1. From Florida

I'll get back to you on how good it is in a few hours....

The stands should start popping up by the end of the week. I planted some on April 15th. It looks like the shorter season varieties will be ready in 7-10 days. I would expect folks like Grimes Sweetcorn who start some earlier should be about ready to harvest.

There should be some sweet corn ready soon, but only if the grower used some kind of plastic early on or grew them in a greenhouse. The cool spring has everything about a week or so behind.

I'm planning a special trip back to Iowa in Aug specifically for the tomatoes and sweet corn.

I was told the tomatoes here in Houston can never be as plump and tastly as up north because tomatoes need cool (60F) nights for optimum growth and taste.

Awesome! I was dissappointed when the stand I always drove by last summer wasn't up last weekend when I went to go see my gf.

The Florida corn at the SuperTarget was surprisingly good. Little chewy, but sweet and plump.

Or maybe it's just been 10 months since Iowa corn.....

In Florida! I've been eating good corn for about 5 months. Just finished an ear that was sweet as candy.

Florida sweet corn is disgusting. I remember buying some a couple years ago, and having to throw 10 ears away because it was so nasty. Maybe I just picked out 12 bad ones, but I do know that I'll be waiting for the real stuff from now on.

Illinois corn is at least a month (more like 2) behind. I went to Chicago last weekend and was shocked at the amount of water over there.

Here in Iowa, corn is waist high.

It has been really rainy around here lately.

My cousin who lives a little further south by st louis (I live pretty close to I80) said when he was flagging off duck stands last week the corn was about 7 feet high but it wasnt tasseling yet, so it is a little better down there.
