Interesting thoughts from Miller & Deace

This morning Miller & Deace were discussing the success Zach Johnson was having. Miller managed to turn it into a Cyclone/Hawkeye debate. He mentioned that it was something for Iowa fans to be proud of. He proceeded to say that he went to Cyclone Fanatic and found a thread about Zach. The thread was quickly turned negative about Zach being a Hawk fan and so on. Miller & Deace discussed the segment of Cyclone fans that are just negative and went on a little more. It seemed like a special attempt by Jon to make Cyclone fans look bad. I went and read the thread and it is pretty silly but took away a couple interesting thoughts about what Jon said.

1.) Iowa fans can and should be proud of a Drake alum who is a Hawk fan but ISU fans cannot dislike a Drake alum who is a Hawk fan. Jon did not say the state of Iowa but rather an Iowa fan and used that as his segue to talk about ISU.

2.) Jon went to a Cyclone message board specifically looking for a thread about Zach Johnson so that he could rip ISU. Does he have nothing better to do than to ponder what ISU fans think about Zach? I thought we were supposed to be obsessed with the Hawks and not the other way around?

Perhaps by posting I am obsessed with Jon but that is irrelevant.

I'm not so worried about that. Here's what bugs me about KXNO.

-Those godawful horrible "contest rules" by some person I can't tell if it's a guy or girl
-that creepy wright outdoor solutions guy
-Herman's Fine Jewelry' HORRIBLE advertising.

That's all for now.

2) Jon didn't come to CF to look for a Zach thread. He comes to CF to find material to talk about on his show.

It irritates the crap out of me when Jon does stuff like this. He likes to mention the very small minority of Cyclone fans that are bitter or ridiculous on his radio show. Then he will say, "I know most Cyclone fans are not like that but...". Then why even mention it Jon? I have NEVER heard you do the same thing with hawk fans. Not to the extreme that you do with Cyclone fans. Like hawk fans are much more level-headed.

That's my only complain about Jon.

Even if he was an ISU fan it wouldn't matter. ISU does not accept non-alumni fans. :jimlad:

Yes, I think he typically does that but this morning he said he went to CF specifically looking for a Zach thread.

If he has no respect for ISU, I have no respect for him. And his comments prior to last year's FB game made it obvious his thoughts. I hope he misses the cut every time out. Honestly, I'd like to see where it is written in law saying that I have to root for every single person who was born in the state of Iowa in whatever they do. Peoples' actions tell me what to think of them, not where they were born. If I disagree with those actions and how they affect things that I care about, then I reserve the right to root for Tiger or Phil and not Zach. Similarly, Jon Miller thinks that it is stupid or pathetic that there are ISU fans that avoid Kum and Go. Well, since Krause gives a ton of money to UofI, why would I not drive across the street to Phillips 66 or BP? I mean, as a consumer, if I cannot vote with my money, what else can I do? Conoco-Phillips has a research investment in ISU. I personally would rather support them than K&G.

I personally do not get this way of thinking where you have to be a robot and support everything with a tie to the state. I support things that are important to me and others that choose to support UI, I avoid. Make a statement with your wallet and don't be a robot.

2) Jon comes to CF to find material to talk about on his show.

He's been doing that for a long time. I hope Jeremy is charging him big bucks. Without CF, he wouldn't be able to continue being a big-time sports reporter.

1) Jon Miller is tolerable, but his "Hawk" has really come out now that he's with Deace. I've really noticed that his snide comments toward ISU have picked up. I just keep telling myself that it's better than Drake Public Radio.

2) I know Zack Johnson is an Iowa fan and a Drake alum, but I still root for him. Regardless of what his affiliations are, he visits the state and I believe he helped raise money for the flood victims in eastern Iowa last year.

We just think people who cheer against their alma mater are ****** bags.

Oh BS. You guys can't stand the fact that Iowa has hordes of fans that didn't even go to Iowa. For some reason you think having a large fanbase is a bad thing. Who cares where they went to college? (or if they even went to college in the first place) A non-alumni's money is just as good as an alumni's money. A non-alumni's voice can be heard just as well at a game as an alumni's voice.

100000%

But if I may, I get tired (being an alumnus) of being ripped on by EIU fans that DIDN'T go there.

Sample exchange after seeing my ISU football poster.
Hawkfan: "HAWKEYES RULE"
Me: "Oh, did you go there?"
Hawkfan: "NO BUT ISU SUX"
Me: "Where'd you go?"
Hawkfan: "AIB, but it doesn't matter, CYCLOWN"

Awesome.

  • I cheer for both Iowa and ISU
  • There is nothing wrong with cheering for both schools
  • There is nothing wrong with a fanbase disliking an athlete because of his favorite collegiate team
  • Both fanbases tend to generalize each other based on a very small minority (Hawk fans are ********, ISU fans have little bro syndrome)
  • This is the first time I've ever used bullets in a post
  • It's nice outside, hopefully tomorrow really is 80 degrees

Why are all Iowa fans alcoholics?

See, I can make broad, sweeping generalizations about a large group of people based on a small sample as well.

And fans of racin' cars. Yesterday at the Iowa Speedway, I couldn't tell if I was at a race track or Kinnick on game day, due to the atire that many people were wearing.

Iowa is a racing state. If you don't realize this, you're blind. Iowa probably has more dirt tracks per capita than any other state in the nation.

That is good. Matriculation into the ISU fan base is more difficult than Iowa's.
I don't listen to Jon, but smart move on his part. However, I think he is missing the point. It really has little to do with Iowa, all to do with ISU. If Johnson was a NU fan, and openly anti-ISU, I would feel the same. Jon's premise that the majority of ISU fans feel this way is also incorrect, although I wish more did.
The only thing about Iowa in this issue is the apparent Freudian nature of some Iowa fans in convincing themselves they preeminent.

It only bothers me when someone who went to ISU cheers for Iowa. I expect that most Iowans who DIDN'T go to ISU will cheer for Iowa. The simple reason is that they don't have a tie to a particular institution competing in FBS football, so they cheer for the most successful in-state school. The "average person" is a bandwagon jumper.

You fall in the category of person who has developed an attachment to a team IN SPITE of your connection to the arch-rival. I don't think you should choose your education based on sports team affiliation, but I think there is some level of attachment/support you should show the institution that gave you a degree. You go to excessive lengths to trash your alma mater, and it's supporters. Did you root against your high school? I doubt it.

Good post. The bullets make you seem more powerful.
