It wasn’t much of a decision for Simeon Carter. After visiting Iowa State a few weekends ago, Carter knew that Ames, Iowa was where he ultimately wanted to be.
New coach? No problem. Steve Prohm’s staff left quite the impression on the 6-foot-8 forward out of West Charlotte, N.C.
“It was everything,” Carter told CycloneFanatic.com on Friday afternoon. “I felt very comfortable around the players. The coaching staff was really cool too. I just feel like I fit in that atmosphere.”
Carter, who averaged 14.5 points and 9.7 rebounds per game as a senior in high school, was vaguely familiar with Iowa State before this process. He of course watched the Fred Hoiberg led Cyclones in the NCAA Tournament the last four seasons.
“I watched their pace and how everyone played,” Carter said. “That’s just how my high school team played. It’s a great opportunity.”
According to what Prohm told Carter during his recruitment, that style of play should be very similar to the Hoiberg years when the Cyclones take the floor this November.
As great as the “fit” between the immediately eligible Carter and Iowa State was, playing time had a lot to do with his decision too.
“His (Prohm) main thing was talking about how we only have two big men and that I will have to step up,” Carter said. “I eventually need to be a leader too. I think it’s such a blessing. I’m going to get to work with some of the best players in college basketball.”
Carter said that he will move to Ames on Aug. 21. He will not participate in Iowa State’s upcoming trip to Spain as the turnaround is simply too short.
