IOWA STATE NOTES

–       After Saturday’s win in Austin, I wrote that Iowa State now has an elite punter in the Big 12 Conference with Kirby Van Der Kamp. I need to correct myself. According to the numbers, Van Der Kamp is an elite punter in America right now. Iowa State’s true freshman is currently the nation’s 13th ranked punter, averaging 45.58 yards per kick. Oddly enough, three of the top 13 punters in America come from the Big 12. Oklahoma State’s Quinn Sharp leads America in punting with an average of 48.17 yards per kick. Nebraska’s Alex Henry is ranked seventh nationally.

–       Iowa State ranks second in the Big 12 in turnover margin at 1.13. Oklahoma is first, with an average of 1.14.

–       A.J. Klein is the Big 12’s second leading tackler, averaging 10.75 tackles per game. Nebraska’s Lavonte David ranks first with an average of 11.14. Right behind Klein is fellow sophomore Cyclone Jake Knott, who is averaging 9.88 tackles per game. Klein and Knott rank 12th and 22nd in the nation. David Sims has quietly snuck up into the Big 12’s top 10 in tackles, with an average of 8.86 per game.
