Iowa State has shown tremendous success in the program’s ability to turn a wide receiver into a top defensive back, most recently in potential NFL Draft pick T.J. Tampa.

As the 2024 recruiting class makes their signings official, Coon Rapids High School’s Khijohnn Cummings-Coleman hopes he can become the next example.

“They didn’t compare me a lot to (any players) like T.J., but they said I showed some of the attributes and same with a lot of their other DB’s – coming from a wide receiver background,” Cummings-Coleman said. “It’s exciting and it’s a little nerve wracking because this is a big thing I’ve been working towards for many, many years. You know, it’s like – it’s official. I just can’t wait to enjoy it and experience it.”

Cummings-Coleman played a majority of his high school career as a receiver, but has been making the transition to defensive back ahead of arriving in Ames.

Iowa State being the first program to offer Cummings-Coleman and maintain its relationship with him played a major role in landing the 2024 prospect.

“Iowa State was my first offer so you know, we’ve we’ve always had that connection,” Cummings-Coleman said. “There’s never been a glimpse of like, they just want me to come to the school and be a number. It feels like they actually want me and they want to value me – that I’m important to them, and stuff like that. Basically, I’ve always felt welcome.”

Cummings-Coleman is rated as the No. 7 prospect out of the state of Minnesota by 247 Sports.

He chose Iowa State over Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Northern Illinois, Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Army, and South Dakota.

“Yeah, this is a it’s a big thing for me and my family,” Cummings-Coleman said. “You know, it’s a big thing for my community High School, that not a lot of people get to experience.”
