Iowa State has flipped Kingsley-Pierson High School’s Beau Goodwin, who was originally committed to South Dakota State, ahead of Early Signing Day on Wednesday.

Goodwin was part of a crop of prospects in town for the weekend as the program makes a push with its available scholarships for the 2024 class and transfer portal.

“They had great facilities, but what it came down to was the players,” Goodwin said of his final choice. “I mean, just being around them, It was it was amazing. I felt like I belonged there with just hanging around the players. (I felt that) especially with the coaches, too. They were genuine people, and I can see that they care about me and that’s what mattered.”

The in-state recruit played four sports – football, basketball, baseball and track – at the Class A level and saw time playing quarterback, wide receiver, safety and linebacker for his high school team.

He’s kept an eye on Iowa State since Director of Player Personnel Derek Hoodjer reached out to Goodwin, following his first game this season.

“We have to go all the way back to the first time coach Hoodjer reached out to me – after my first game,” Goodwin said. “He’s like ‘you’re a really good ballplayer,’ so (since then) I’ve always had (Iowa State) on my mind. And you know Brookings offered me a scholarship first, so I went with them but as soon as I heard Iowa State offered me, I was like man, I need to go see this place.”

Goodwin was offered the scholarship weeks ago when Iowa State’s head coach gave him a phone call.

“Matt Campbell called me a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been obviously talking with Coach Veidt and all that. Coach Campbell called – we had a really good phone call and he offered me a scholarship. And so this week, we got special visits set up. The official visit was really good. Great people, coaches and players. I really enjoyed it.”

Iowa State projects the 6-foot-4, 200-pounder as a linebacker.

Goodwin becomes the 19th commitment so far to the 2024 class, which will be close to being finalized Wednesday.
