Iowa State quarterback commit Connor Moberly became a three-time state champion last time he was on a football field.
On Wednesday, he’ll sign his national letter intent, alongside his best friend Carson Robbins – who’s signing as a preferred walk-on, to fulfill his dreams of becoming a Cyclone.
“It’s a dream come true,” Moberly said. “Being able to sign and get up there early with one of my teammates and my future teammates is just going to be great. I’m ready to get up there and just get to work.”
Early Signing Day for the 2024 class will make the continuance of his family’s Iowa State legacy official.
“It’s cool being kind of like a Cyclone family,” Moberly said. “Both of my parents went there, my brother’s there and now (he’s) doing things with this fraternity and the student section and all that. It’ll be great to be up there with him for a semester and a full year.”
The 6-foot-4, 195-pound quarterback was offered by Iowa State in November of 2022.
He almost thought about committing there, on the spot.
“Before my high school season, (Iowa State) just felt like where I was going to be anyways,” Moberly said. “Even when I got that offer, I thought about taking it right away. That’s always been my dream school, you know where I want to be. It’s just great to finally make it come true.”
His offer sheet includes only Northern Iowa, but that’s because of the relationships formed early on in his recruiting process along with his family ties.
Duke and Pittsburgh both reached out to Moberly before he was officially committed.
“They were kind of asking if I was wanting to continue recruiting process with them,” Moberly said. “I kind of just told them, I already have my decision made with Iowa State. That’s kind of where I was at with the recruiting.”
Moberly, who is enrolling early, will join the quarterback room in Ames alongside breakout star Rocco Becht and J.J. Kohl, who was rated as a four-star prospect coming out of high school a year ago.
“It’s going to be a very talented quarterback room,” Moberly said. “It’ll be very fun to go out there, enjoy it and learn from them and continue to get better every day with that quarterback room.”
Along with Robbins, Moberly will reunite with Iowa State running back Abu Sama, who took handoffs from the Southeast Polk signal-caller in the 2022 state title game in route to six touchdowns on 372 rushing yards.
He said the recruiting process at Iowa State stands out over other schools he’s visited, too.
“It’s just a great place to be at – with the coaches and everybody there,” Moberly said. “It’s just kind of different recruiting there, and I think a lot of people can tell you the same. Walking through the building, everybody’s saying ‘what’s up’ to you and knowing your name. Everybody’s just treating you like family. So I mean, that was kind of my biggest decision with my recruiting, was just going to where I feel at home.”
Iowa State believes strongly in the potential shown by Moberly over the past 24 months between his high school career and summer camps. Now, he’ll have his chance to prove it.
