AMES, Iowa – Weekly honors continue to roll in for David Carr as he was named the NCAA and Big 12 Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday.

Carr picked up a statement victory over then-No. 1 Keegan O’Toole of Missouri last Wednesday in Columbia. The Cyclone knocked of the defending 165-pound national champion, 7-2, and snapped O’Toole’s 41-match win streak.

This marks Carr’s second-career Big 12 weekly honor and first since Nov. 26, 2020. He is the fourth different Cyclone to be recognized this season, the most of any school in the league.

The win has moved Carr up to No. 1 nationally at 165 pounds and No. 5 on the pound-for-pound list in FloWrestling’s latest rankings.

Carr, who has won 26 consecutive matches, showed his sharp technical skills and his strong scrambling ability to secure two takedowns in the victory. He then rode O’Toole for the entire third period to secure the riding time point.

The bout, featuring two highly credentialed wrestlers, was coined as the “Match of the Year” entering the matchup. The pair could meet again this season, potentially twice more, at the Big 12 Championship and NCAA Championships.

Carr finished the regular season with 72 takedowns while only allowing three, a 24:1 ratio. He posted a 20-0 record with victories against eight wrestlers ranked inside the top 15.

The Ohio native was also named the USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on Friday.

This was the final Big 12 weekly award of the 2022-23 season.

Iowa State wrestling is back in action at the Big 12 Championship March 4-5 at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Stay tuned to Cyclones.com for seeding and bracket information in the coming weeks.
