Cyclones win 37-7 at home over Wyoming

Iowa State continues its win streak at home after notching a 37-7 win over the Wyoming Cowboys.

That marks 13 straight in Big 12 action for Kevin Dresser.

The Cyclones set themselves apart with a dominant win made up of three pins, two major decisions, and one technical fall.

“We talk about separating yourself when you get a chance, all the time. It’s important to do that because you can’t go into the NCAA Championship or the Big 12 Championships and expect to win by one or two all the time. We have to learn how to separate ourselves,” Dresser said. “I was glad to see that happen.”

Two wrestlers who have been battling their way to starting spots in the lineup, Julien Broderson (174) and Ramazan Attasaouv (133), made a statement with each earning a win by fall in the first period.

“Experiencing that in front of a Hilton crowd is something you always dream of. Being able to get the crowd really loud was exciting,” Broderson said who pinned his opponent in 22 seconds.

Coach Dresser announced this week that Broderson had officially earned the starting spot at 174 over Joel Devine.

“It was a battle. I’ve been trying to crawl my way to the starting lineup and that’s the type of program you want to be in, where it’s hard to get in the starting lineup,” Broderson said.

Attasouv still has a bit to go against his teammate Zach Redding but he isn’t concerned as his confidence stays intact.

“I have no doubt and I never had a doubt that I am the best in the country. Not just against Redding. I have no doubt in my mind,” Attasaouv said. “It’s fun to perform the way I did today and we have a good turnaround and there’s a top guy in the country tomorrow. I’m excited.”

In his return to action, heavyweight Sam Schuyler helped contribute to those bonus point wins with a 19-8 win with over two minutes of riding time.

Casey Swiderski also had a solid 7-2 win in his return even while wearing a brace around his injured shoulder.

“We had a quick team meeting and the number one thing I wanted to know was how they felt and the answers were both good. There are no lingering effects of anything. I think they were both a little rusty but they did what they had to do and went out and dominated.”

Iowa State will return to Hilton in 24 hours against No. 3 Arizona State.

“It’s time to really focus. This simulates what these guys are going to go through at the end of the year. They get one extra pound in between, you go through the same routine. It’s really a wonderful opportunity.”

A win over Arizona State would be huge for the Cyclones in team rankings. It would earn them the No. 3 spot over the Sun Devils. That would be the highest ranking for the Cyclones since the 2009-10 season when they were ranked No. 2 all season.
