Iowa State’s inability to get out of its own way has struck again.
The Cyclones fell to Oklahoma State on Saturday in Stillwater, 20-14, while turning the ball over five times with three of those turnovers coming in Cowboy territory.
Iowa State outgained Oklahoma State by nearly 100 yards, out-passed and out-rushed the Cowboys and ran 19 more plays than Mike Gundy’s team. Oklahoma State’s offense was held to 244 yards of offense, 187 yards passing and 57 yards rushing.
Oklahoma State converted on 1-of-14 3rd downs in the game.
And won.
Iowa State’s offense was once again plagued by an inconsistent rushing attack with Cartevious Norton carrying the ball 17 times for 49 yards.
Hunter Dekkers’ afternoon was a roller coaster as he completed 28-of-42 passes for 274 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Xavier Hutchinson was dominant with 10 receptions for 106 yards while surpassing 1,000 yards receiving on the season and breaking the program’s all-time career receptions record.
Defensively, Iowa State was magnificent from nearly beginning to end.
Mason Chambers and Gerry Vaughn each totaled six tackles to lead the team while MJ Anderson posted five tackles, including three tackles for loss. TJ Tampa and Beau Freyler each added interceptions.
Iowa State will host Texas Tech next Saturday in its regular season home finale at Jack Trice Stadium.
