McCrae Hagarty, a two-time state champ for Waverly-Shell Rock, announced his commitment to Iowa State via his Twitter on Friday morning.
He chose Iowa State over the likes of Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Iowa, among others. He is projected to wrestle at 197 pounds.
Hagarty is currently ranked 7th nationally at 195 pounds. He’s also the No. 34 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to MatScouts. He is Kevin Dresser’s second top-50 commit for 2023.
Some of his accolades from the prior season were earning All-American honors at the 16U national championships in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. He had a third-place finish at the Cadet men’s freestyle world team trials. He’ll enter his senior season with a 117-8 career record. His back-to-back state titles were at 182 pounds as a sophomore and 195 as a junior. He is currently ranked at No. 1 at 195 in Class 3A in IAWrestle’s preseason poll.
Hagarty is the third 2023 class to commit to the Cyclones, joining Linn-Mar’s Tate Naaktgeboren and Prairie’s Blake Gioimo.
