As first reported by ESPN, the College Football Playoff Board of Managers voted to expand the postseason tournament to 12 teams as early as the 2026 season on Friday.

With the unanimous vote being approved, many involved are encouraging commissioners to try to implement the new format in an earlier year. The report states 2024 has come into play as an earlier year to target.

The format agreed upon includes six bids for the highest rated conference champions and six at-large teams to fill out the field.

The conference commissioners as well as Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick will meet in person next week in Dallas to discuss details.
