Iowa State’s latest defensive back commit didn’t have an FBS scholarship offer coming into May.

The Cyclones changed that when defensive backs coach Deon Broomfield attended practice to watch the Independence CC prospect in action last week.

“Coach Broomfield came up to see me practice in person and watch me move a little bit,” McGee said. “He told me to holler at him after practice and we all sat down to talk about football.”

After talking with the prospect that day, Iowa State extended a scholarship offer to the 6-foot-4, 210-pounder.

“I committed on the spot,” McGee said.

McGee, who describes himself as a playmaker, didn’t originally think Iowa State would offer him.

The Detroit native got a text from Iowa State Director of Player Personnel Derek Hoodjer, which was where the conversations started.

“After the second week of spring ball, the recruiting coordinator texted me. I didn’t think they were interested because I didn’t hear back (right away), but his response was, ‘I checked out your film and I love it, man.'”

McGee will have his opportunity to prove himself, now.

That’s what the discussions with Broomfield have centered around.

“We’ve had conversations about the technique and the defense we play,” McGee said. “He wants me to come in with a chip on my shoulder and earn a spot.”

McGee will report to Ames on Thursday, May 19 to begin preparing for the 2022 football season.
