A.J. Spellacy was invited to a USA Hockey tryout camp that showcased the top 47 hockey players born in 2006 earlier this year.

This week, he received his first power five conference scholarship offer to play football, coming from Iowa State.

“The USA Hockey camp was a lot of fun,” Spellacy said. “I met a lot of new guys and it was with the most talented players from across the country.”

For as good as Spellacy is with a stick and a puck, he performs on the football field as well.

The current high school sophomore out of Ohio is rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports, playing at both the wideout and free safety spots.

He doesn’t yet know what sport he will choose to play in the future.

“I’m just seeing what the best opportunity is for me moving forward, because I’m still a sophomore,” Spellacy said. “Whatever I succeed more at is probably what I’ll do in the future. It’s pretty tough, because I obviously love both and work hard at both. It’s tough to balance them, but it’s a lot of fun.”

The talented two-sport athlete holds offers thus far from Iowa State, Toledo and Illinois State.

“It was pretty awesome (to get an offer from Iowa State) – I know it’s a great school. They’ve got a great coaching staff, nice facilities and they get a great crowd every game. It was pretty cool to get that offer.”

Spellacy will have the better part of two years to decide which sport he wants to play, but getting an offer from Iowa State could open up opportunities in the football world.

Right now, though, he’s just focused on improving and getting ready for the 2022 seasons.

“Getting that first power five offer means a lot. A lot of schools see that and they’ll look at it and see something more in you. It doesn’t really change anything for me, moving forward and working hard. I’m just trying to be the best player that I can be.”
