Iowa State earned a commitment on Tuesday from three-star Ohio ATH prospect in Cam Smith.
The 5-foot-11 prospect will play safety at Iowa State and makes up for his shorter frame with his detail in assignments and footwork.
“My emphasis is assignment-based,” Smith said. “When I go in there, (the first thing I’ll do) is learn the playbook in and out. I want to make sure when I get my opportunity, I don’t make any mistakes. Mistakes can cost you a game and a season.”

For his last high school season, Smith will play wide receiver as well as strong safety for Austintown Fitch High School in Ohio.
After playing quarterback during his freshman season, he shifted into a two-way player and is still used as an option depending on the need of his team.
“You’re going to get one of the hardest workers you’ll ever meet,” Smith said. “I’m going to out-work anyone that’s standing next to me, regardless of if they’re on my team or not. That’s just how I am.”
Smith has goals of bringing a conference championship to Iowa State, which would mark the first for the program since its 1912 Missouri Valley Conference title.
“I want to strive to bring a championship back to Ames,” Smith said. “That’s the goal and I feel like with this class that we’re building, we can do that.”
