MES, Iowa – Senior Ethan Andersen won the title at heavyweight Sunday, as the Iowa State wrestling team closed the regular season at the Last Chance Open. Andersen was one of seven Cyclones to advance to the finals at Hilton Coliseum.
Andersen advanced to the finals with a pair of bonus point wins, including a fall in 2:53 and a 10-1 major decision against Minnesota’s Bennett Tabor. In the finals, Andersen used a takedown with :18 left and a two-point nearfall with :15 left to beat Minnesota’s Keaton Kluever 9-5.
At 125 pounds, Caleb Fuessley went 2-1 to finish second. Fuessley ended the day with a 21-5 technical fall against SIUE’s Davian Guanajuato. Corey Cabanban advanced to the finals at 133 pounds with a 21-9 major decision against Arizona State’s Lou Fincher before falling by 8-0 major decision to Minnesota’s Aaron Nagao in the finals.ADVERTISING
Jason Kraisser used a fall in 1:54 and a 16-0 technical fall to advance to the finals at 157 pounds. In the championship match, Minnesota’s Sebas Swiggum used a takedown in sudden victory for the 10-8 victory. At 165 pounds, Grant Stotts opened the day with a 10-2 major decision over North Carolina’s Isaias Estrada before advancing to the finals with a 2-0 decision. In the championship match, Iowa’s Patrick Kennedy defeated Stotts 8-4.
At 184 pounds, Nolan Harsh had a bye before downing Iowa Central’s Aiden Carr 6-2 in the semifinals. Harsh lost by fall in 2:10 to Minnesota’s Sam Skillings in the finals.
Iowa State returns to action March 5-6 at the Big 12 Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
