Dan Johnson, a former Iowa State football player, was 25-years-old when he made a 10-yard touchdown in the 1986 AFC Championship. He was a Miami Dolphin when Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino made the pass to Johnson in the second quarter.
That was the last time a Cyclone made a touchdown in an NFL playoff game. The year 1986!
Until this weekend.
Allen Lazard, at 25-years-old, sealed the fate of the Packers in the fourth quarter with a 58-yard touchdown to punch their ticket to the NFC Championship.
But, it wasn’t just a touchdown. It was the touchdown.
According to Packers.com, head coach Matt LaFleur called it a “Big-time play in a big moment”.
The Packers were only leading by one score with just a little over six minutes left on the clock when Rodgers found Lazard in a play-action fake to bring the score 32-18.
That touchdown pass is also the longest pass touchdown in the playoffs in Rodgers’ career.
Lazard went from being the Cyclone that was undrafted and was released from the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad to the wide receiver headed to his second NFC Championship Game.
Plus, Lazard received his own imaginary crown for his stellar catch from the nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback during their celebration. This is something Lazard has been known to do for his teammates all season.
“That was pretty cool. Obviously, I’ve been crowning those guys all year, Lazard told the media after the game. “I don’t think I deserve it too much yet. For him to do that, it kind of shows the respect that he has for me, the trust that he has for me.”
Lazard finished the game with four catches for 96-yards.
