Iowa State landed a late addition to its 2020 recruiting class on Wednesday when Butler Community College tight end DeShawn Hanika announced his commitment to Matt Campbell’s program on Twitter.

Hanika redshirted during the 2019 season after suffering a major knee injury as a high school senior so he will be a redshirt freshman when he joins the program (hopefully) this fall. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound prospect also held offers from Louisiana, Florida Atlantic and UTEP, but had reportedly received interest from a host of Power 5 programs, including Colorado, Oklahoma State, Michigan State and TCU.

The Topeka, Kan. native will join a tight end room in Ames that figures to be one of the best in the country this season led by All-Big 12 honorees Charlie Kolar and Chase Allen plus Dylan Seonbuchner. The Cyclones also have another pair of tight ends who will be redshirt freshmen in the fall in Skylar Loving-Black and Easton Dean.
