WBB: Cyclones locked into 4-5 game in Kansas City

Iowa State earned a historic upset win over the No. 2 Baylor Lady Bears at Hilton Coliseum on Sunday and will now turn their attention to the conference tournament in Kansas City.

The win did little to help the team’s seeding in the bracket, thanks to Texas winning its final game of the season, but it will boost Iowa State’s overall resume along the way.

“That obviously boosts our confidence a lot, but we’ve still got to work hard,” junior Rae Johnson said. “We’ve still got to buckle down. We’ve still got to focus on what we have ahead. It puts us in a great position for the future. We have to take advantage of it.”

Before the big dance, Iowa State will take on No. 5 Kansas State on Friday morning, looking to face the Lady Bears again in Round 2.

The two teams split their season series this year, with Iowa State taking the game at Hilton by 14 points, and Kansas State defeating the Cyclones two weeks ago at the ‘Octagon of Doom’.

Ashley Joens led the team in scoring in both games averaging 19.0 points and 12.0 rebounds through the pair of games against KSU.

The Cyclones will celebrate the upset victory on Sunday night, but a week in Kansas City is the last thing that stands between them and March Madness.

They’ll be ready to get right back to work.

The two teams will go at it on Friday at Municipal Auditorium with the game scheduled to tip-off at 11:00 a.m. on Fox Sports Midwest.

The full conference tournament bracket can be seen below.
