Caleb Grill will transfer from Iowa State

Two days after Zion Griffin announced his plans to transfer from Iowa State, freshman guard Caleb Grill did the same. The Maize, Kan. native made his intentions to leave the program public via his social media accounts Wednesday afternoon.

Grill, a 6-foot-3, 192-pound guard, was a late addition to Iowa State’s 2019 recruiting class, signing with the program in the spring over UNLV and Kansas State. He originally signed with South Dakota State and former Iowa State assistant TJ Otzelberger, but was released from his National Letter of Intent once Otz left to take over as the head man for the Runnin’ Rebels.

In his first season in Ames, Grill struggled mightily at times as he averaged 2.1 points and 1.7 rebounds while shooting 31 percent from the field and 25 percent from 3-point range. He broke out of a long shooting slump to hit five 3-pointers in the team’s final four games, including three in the season-ending Big 12 Tournament loss to Oklahoma State in which he finished with career-highs in points (nine) and rebounds (eight).

Grill’s departure leaves Iowa State with two scholarships open for the spring recruiting cycle with at least one more likely to open when Tyrese Haliburton, a projected lottery pick in the NBA Draft, announces his expected decision to turn pro rather than return to Iowa State for his junior season.
