Brock Purdy’s backup is looking for a new home.
Iowa State redshirt freshman quarterback Re-al Mitchell announced on Saturday morning that he has put his name into the transfer portal and will look for a new school to continue his college career.
Mitchell appeared in five games this past season, recording 100 yards and a touchdown on the ground along with going 2-of-4 for 14 yards and a touchdown through the air. He also caught one pass for three yards.
The Eastville, Calif. native was highly-regarded as a high school prospect out of St. John Bosco High School. He chose the Cyclones over offers from Arizona, Illinois, Kansas State, South Carolina, Rutgers and others, but was overshadowed once Purdy announced his decision to play for Iowa State in the second signing period of the 2018 recruiting class.
The departure leaves Iowa State with three scholarship quarterbacks in Purdy plus true freshmen Aidan Bouman and Hunter Dekkers. Bouman arrived on campus for the spring semester while Dekkers will join the program this summer.
