WBB: Massive comeback falls short for Cyclones

AMES, Iowa – No. 22 Oklahoma State (18-6, 9-4 Big 12) hung on to defeat Iowa State (10-14, 4-9 Big 12), 81-73 Saturday night in Hilton Coliseum.

Iowa State was down by as many as 26 points in the first half, but battled back to make it a one-point game on multiple occasions. ISU was down by only three points with under a minute left, but the Cowgirls scored the last five points to come out on top.

Madison Wise led the Cyclones with a career-high 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and a 5-of-7 effort from 3-point range. She also led the Cyclones on the boards with nine.

Emily Durr added 19 points and Bridget Carleton tallied 13.

OSU was led by Kaylee Jensen, who poured in 35 points on 12-of-18 shooting.

How It Happened

Both teams came out hot, as the Cyclones took an early lead at 15-14 with five minutes left in the first quarter. Both teams made 6-of-7 shots to open the game.

OSU then went on a 12-2 run to end the first stanza with a 26-17 lead.

It was 31-17 OSU until Meredith Burkhall stopped the Cowgirl run with a baseline jumper. The OSU lead then stretched to 26 points (45-19) behind a 14-0 Cowgirl run. Durr buried a 3-pointer to help ISU close the half on a 6-0 run and go into intermission down 45-25.

The Cyclones battled back after the break. Wise and Durr combined for 15 of ISU’s first 18 points in the second half to cut the deficit to 50-43 with 4:54 left in the third quarter. ISU then closed the gap to just one point (56-55) after back-to-back 3-pointers from Carleton and Wise.

ISU outscored the Cowgirls, 30-12 in the third quarter, matching its record for points in a quarter. ISU entered the fourth quarter down by two points at 57-55.

A Carleton trey cut the OSU lead to 59-58 at the beginning of the fourth , but Jensen starting scoring down low, increasing the OSU lead to 69-61. Burkhall then scored five-straight points, including a trey to inch the Cyclones closer at 69-66 with 5:36 left.

A Carelton hoop in the paint with :50 seconds left made it 76-73 OSU. However, Braxtin Miller made a desperation 3-pointer off an in-bound play as the shot clock was winding down to push the OSU lead to 79-73 with :17 seconds remaining.

Players of Note

Madison Wise tallied her 10^th double-digit scoring game with a career-high 21 points. Wise was 5-of-7 from 3-point range tonight and is 10-for-12 from deep in her last two contests. Wise had 11 third-quarter points.

Emily Durr posted her 12^th double-digit scoring game of the year with 19 points. She scored 13 points in the third quarter to aid the Cyclone comeback.
