WBB: Cyclones no contest for No. 6 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – A 25-1 run for No. 6 Texas (16-4, 7-2 Big 12) pushed them past Iowa State (9-12, 3-7 Big 12) 87-55 Saturday night at the Erwin Center. The Cyclones led at the halfway point of the second quarter, but UT closed out the first half on an 11-1 run, and then posted the first 14 points of the third quarter to put ISU away.

The Iowa State effort was led by Emily Durr, who finished with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, her second 20-point effort of the season. Bridget Carleton continued her run of scoring in double figures in each game this season with 19 points.

How It Happened

ISU got off to a strong start, running off the first five points of the contest, all via Emily Durr. The Cyclone senior had nine first quarter points and proved to be a problem for the Longhorns. However, Texas fought back, erasing ISU’s 12-8 lead to get ahead 18-14, but Madison Wise’s 3-pointer in the final seconds cut UT’s lead to one after one quarter.

The No. 6 Horns controlled the second 10 minutes, as they started clicking on offense, hitting 9-of-15 shots in the quarter and defensively, holding ISU to 4-of-11 shooting while forcing five Cyclone turnovers. A 3-pointer by Bridget Carleton got the visitors back ahead 29-28, but the Longhorns closed the half on an 11-1 run to carry a 39-30 lead into the locker room.

Texas blew open the game in the first three minutes of the third quarter, as the Horns racked up the first 14 points of the quarter. UT hit its first nine shots of the period and build up a lead of as many as 25 points in the process.

Players of Note

Emily Durr made sure ISU’s presence was known early, as she put through ISU’s first five points en route to nine in the first quarter. Durr got her second 20-point game of the season and fifth of her career, finishing with 20 points.

Bridget Carleton followed up her historic performance Wednesday night at Oklahoma State with 19 more points Saturday night in Austin. Carleton has scored in double figures in all 21 games this season for the Cyclones.

Cyclone Quick Hits

*Iowa State has hit a 3-pointer in an NCAA-record 725-straight contests.

*Emily Durr notched 20 points, her fifth career 20-point game, and her second of this season.

*Saturday was Durr’s 10th game of the season in double figures and 31st for her career.

*Bridget Carleton finished with 19 points. She has been in double figures all 21 games this season and 63 times in her career.
