How It Happened

The Cyclones survived an 8-0 Mountaineer run early and responded to knot the game at 12-12 on a Kristin Scott jumper with 7:47 to play in the half. However, Iowa State struggled offensively, scoring just four points in the second quarter. The Cyclones were plagued by a 7-of-37 shooting performance from the field in the opening 20 minutes, including 0-of-16 from beyond the 3-point arc. West Virginia closed the half on a 14-2 run to pull ahead 26-14 at the break.

West Virginia started fast following the intermission, taking its largest lead of the game at 31-16 with 7:42 to play in the third quarter. Senior Emily Durr would lead an ISU charge, helping slice the deficit in half by the end of the stanza. Durr scored Iowa State’s next seven points, including the first ISU 3-pointer of the day, narrowingWVU’s lead to 36-29.

Iowa State carried its momentum into the final quarter, knocking down three triples on four attempts after shooting 1-of-19 from deep in the first 30 minutes. The Cyclones closed the gap to just two at 47-49 with 2:14 to play following a trey by Carleton.

However, the Cyclones were never able to tie or take the lead, as West Virginia put the game away at the free throw line.
