Matt Campbell spent his Tuesday evening in Charlotte being honored in front of his peers. Campbell will bring some more hardware back to Ames with him for one specific play.
Iowa State’s head coach received the USA Today Sports Coach’s Play Call of the Year award for his choice to go for two vs. Oklahoma on Oct. 7 in that triumphant upset victory of the Sooners.
At the time of the call, the Cyclones trailed OU 24-22 when Kyle Kempt connected with Allen Lazard for a two-point conversion that tied things up.
“With that, the Cyclones grabbed momentum and the victory,” read the American Football Coaches Association press release.
It was an online vote that thwarted Campbell to receive the honor edging out Wisconsin’s Paul Christ.
“What a great honor for Iowa State athletics, and really our fan base, to be honored on such a special night here at the AFCA Convention as we continue to lay the foundation of our program,” Campbell said in the release.
