WBB: Cyclones outscore No. 19 OSU by 19 in second half, stun Cowgirls

STILLWATER, Okla. – Iowa State (9-11, 3-6 Big 12) amassed a second-half comeback to knock off No. 19 Oklahoma State (14-6, 5-3 Big 12) on the road. ISU trailed OSU by 10 points at the half, but outscored the Pokes 48-29 in the second half to pull off the upset.

It was yet another career night for Bridget Carleton. The Chatham, Ontario, native scored a career-high 39 points. She was lights out, shooting at a 16-22 clip from the field and 4-7 from downtown.

How It Happened

At the half, the Cyclones trailed 40-30. Carleton paced ISU, pouring in 17 first-half points. Carleton shot 8-10 from the field, including 1-1 from behind the arc.

As a team, the Cyclones struggled to get their offense rolling. At the half, the Cardinal and Gold were shooting 35% from the field and just 16% from three.

To begin the third quarter though, ISU started red hot and bolstered a 10-2 run. They quickly erased OSU’s lead, bringing the margin to just 42-40. The Cowgirls jumped back out to a 47-40 lead after that Cyclone burst, but an 8-0 Iowa State run gave ISU their first lead of the game at 48-47.

The Iowa State defense was stifling in the third quarter, forcing five OSU turnovers and holding the Pokes to just 23% from the field. At the end of the third quarter however, Oklahoma State led 52-48.

Iowa State remained active on the defensive end, holding Oklahoma State scoreless for nearly four minutes in the fourth quarter. A Carleton and-one at the 5:09 mark put the Cyclones back on top 60-58.

Oklahoma State tied the game at 60-60, but an Adriana Camber made three at the four minute mark gave the Cyclones a lead that they would not relinquish.

After not shooting a single free throw in the first half, and just one one in the third quarter, the Cyclones made 13-18 down the stretch to salt away the Iowa State upset.

Players of Note

Bridget Carleton poured in a career high 39 points in the Iowa State win. She also paced the team in rebounds, hauling in nine boards.

Emily Durr was a great complement to Carleton, dishing out four assists. She aided in the Cyclone scoring herself, netting 16 points. She was also good for five boards on the night.

Cyclone Quick Hits

*Carleton’s 39 points were the 3rd most in school history and the most scored by a Big 12 player this season.

*Carleton becomes the sixth player since 1999-2000 to score 39+ points and bring in 9+ boards in a conference game and only the fifth to do so in regulation.

*This is the most points in a game by a Cyclone since Allison Lacey tossed in 35 on Nov. 23, 2007.

*Iowa State has beaten a ranked opponent on the road in five of the last six seasons.

Iowa State remains on the road and will head to Texas this weekend. The Cyclones and Longhorns are set to play at 7 p.m. on Saturday afternoon on the Longhorn Network.
