Iowa State linebacker Joel Lanning has been named a first-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America. Lanning was joined by Iowa’s Josh Jackson and Josey Jewell as first-team selections when the FWAA released their teams on Monday.

Lanning led the Cyclones with 110 tackles in his only season playing linebacker at the collegiate level. He also recorded 10 tackles for loss, five sacks, a fumble recovery and an interception.

His 110 total tackles were good for the second-best mark in the Big 12 conference. His five sacks were the sixth-highest total in the conference.

Lanning is the first Cyclone since Troy Davis to be named a first-team All-American by the Football Writers. He is only the sixth Cyclone ever to be named to the FWAA’s first-team.
