PREDICTIONS: Iowa State vs. Baylor

Other than a slip up against Texas, Baylor has played very well at home this season in Big 12 play. The Bears nearly beat Oklahoma and West Virginia in Waco and despite a 1-9 record, are still playing very hard for first year head coach Matt Rhule. I fully anticipate this to be a nail biter for Cyclone fans. Iowa State is beat up and emotionally drained following last week’s 49-42 loss to Oklahoma State. This is where Matt Campbell’s steady coaching hand comes into play. Iowa State will perform like its coach leads and pull this off, but I don’t anticipate it to be easy.

THE PICK: Iowa State 27, Baylor 24

Baylor may be the best 1-9 team in history. In all seriousness, they have only one win for a reason. The Cyclones are the better team and should be able to move the ball with either Kempt or Noland. Expect another big day from David Montgomery.

I see the Bears putting a scare into the Cyclones for a half or three quarters, but I think Iowa State’s offense will prevail in the end. David Montgomery has a big day and Zeb Noland does enough.

Baylor is going to see this game as the last winnable one on their schedule, partly because they play TCU next week and partly because of the stigma historically associated with Iowa State football. I expect the Bears to give the Cyclones their best shot, but the good news is this ISU team is resilient and have powered through tougher opposition this year. Another big day for David Montgomery gets Iowa State out of Waco with a win.

THE PICK: Iowa State 35, Baylor 28

This game WOULD scare me if this team hasn’t showed immense maturity and poise throughout the entire season. The environment in Waco is always weird, and I played when they were actually a winning team. This will be especially dead, which would be hard for an immature group. Not these guys. Clones in an uncomfortable but comfortable win.
THE PICK: Iowa State 44, Baylor 24

Bears have shown signs of life with Charlie Brewer triggering the offense, but the defense continues to flounder. I expect Zeb Noland or Kyle Kempt to pick Baylor apart. David Montgomery will shine as well as the Cyclones assure themselves of a winning conference record.

THE PICK: Iowa State 38, Baylor 24

Iowa State is a good football team and they really haven’t wavered from that all season long. They’re in a tough spot trying to bounce back from a tough loss while likely seeing dreams of a chance at the conference title slip through their fingers. I think they’ll respond with a solid win on the road in Waco for the first time since 2004.

Baylor plays competent offense with Charlie Brewer at the helm.  ISU’s defense is a little leaky, but still stout.  Baylor’s defense is poor. Period.  If ISU’s offensive reemergence is real, there is little standing in the way of a 40 point output.  That is where my expectation lies. The defense will once again be stingy and it will get out of hand early.
THE PICK: Iowa State 52 Baylor 24
