Iowa State picked up its first win of the season on Thursday with a 104-96 victory over Appalachian State in the quarterfinals of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. The Cyclones advance to play the winner of Tulsa/Western Michigan Friday night at 7.
Iowa State was led by 22 points from Donovan Jackson. Nick Weiler-Babb pitched in a career-high 21 points while Lindell Wigginton, 17 points, and Jeff Beverly, 10 points, also scored in double-figures.
Cameron Lard and Hans Brase contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds and four points and five rebounds, respectively, in their first action for the Cyclones. Appalachian State was led by 32 from Justin Forest while Ronshad Shabazz added 30 points.
Iowa State was much improved on the offensive end of the court shooting 51.6 percent from the field, 43.5 from 3-point range and 78.8 from the free throw line. App State shot 38.8 from the field and 38.5 from behind-the-arc while making a new tournament record 15 3-pointers.
